Morris County, NJ – A small earthquake rattled part of North Jersey early Monday morning, but officials say it caused no damage or injuries.
UPDATE: The U.S. Geological Survey confirms two minor earthquakes early yesterday.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 1.6 earthquake struck just west of Morris Plains around 5:40 a.m.
While the tremor may have startled some early risers, most residents likely didn’t feel it. Seismologists note that earthquakes below magnitude 3.0 are typically too weak to be widely noticed.
This minor quake comes months after New Jersey experienced a much stronger magnitude 4.8 earthquake in April, which was felt across multiple states and caused widespread concern.
Local officials and emergency services reported no damage or injuries from Monday’s seismic activity.
Why Small Earthquakes Happen in New Jersey
While New Jersey isn’t known for major earthquakes like the West Coast, minor tremors do occasionally occur due to ancient fault lines beneath the region. Experts say these small quakes are usually harmless but serve as reminders of the area’s geological history.
What To Do During an Earthquake
Even a minor earthquake can be unsettling. Safety experts recommend the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” method if you ever feel shaking:
✅ Drop to your hands and knees to prevent falling
✅ Cover your head and neck under a sturdy surface
✅ Hold on until the shaking stops
