TRENTON, NJ – If you opened your June energy bill and fainted, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Governor Phil Murphy, Senate President Nick Scutari, and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin announced a whopping $430 million in energy bill relief for New Jersey residents, after ratepayers were hit with a sizzling 20% increase in electric prices as of June 1, 2025.
Yes, you read that right. Energy prices are now so high, your thermostat is asking you to chill.
“We Broke It, But Here’s $100”
Every one of New Jersey’s 3.9 million utility customers will get at least $100 back, which should almost cover the price of running your air conditioner during one July weekend. Low-to-moderate income households will receive an extra $150 on top — because nothing says “sorry for the pain” like a prepaid apology on your PSE&G bill.
This oh-so-timely generosity is funded by a mix of sources including:
-
The Clean Energy Fund (translation: money we took from you before),
-
The RGGI (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative – the acronym is longer than the patience of ratepayers),
-
And the Solar Alternative Compliance Payment Account, which may or may not be a fancy way of saying “green piggy bank.”
Can’t Buy Me Love — Or Political Amnesia
Opposition leaders and critics weren’t exactly throwing a ticker tape parade.
“You can’t bribe your way out of this one,” muttered every taxpayer, and echoed by the NJBIA’s Ray Cantor, who pointed out that the Energy Master Plan — a.k.a. the state’s green roadmap — is partly why we’re in this electric mess.
According to Cantor, “We’ve been warning for years that shutting down power plants and chasing windmills like Don Quixote would lead to this.”
Meanwhile, Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco lit a rhetorical fire under Trenton’s feet, saying:
“This is not relief. It’s a cover-up. A band-aid. A political defibrillator to stop your vote from flatlining in an election year.”
In other words, the credit is like putting a tiny umbrella in a hurricane and calling it “climate control.”
So… Now What?
According to Murphy & Co., this is part of a “comprehensive energy transition.” According to Republicans, this is part of a “complete policy disaster.” According to the rest of us, this is part of our monthly budget nightmare.
Unless something changes fast, expect more hot takes — and even hotter utility bills.
In Summary:
-
$430 million in relief is being dished out because of record-high wholesale electric prices.
-
Everyone gets $100, some get $250 total.
-
Critics say this is like giving you a cold drink after setting the house on fire.
-
Energy policies, not just markets, may be behind your melting bank account.

Democrats are the same everywhere.
They take your dollars and waste them, every now and then they throw you a penny.
The energy system has been broken by Democrats.
