Ridgewood NJ, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, there is a slight chance of seeing the northern lights in New Jersey on Thursday, July 13, 2023. The Kp index is expected to be between 3 and 4, which is considered a minor geomagnetic storm. Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 PM and 2 AM local time). These hours of active aurora expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases.

The Kp-index is a scale used to characterize the magnitude of geomagnetic disturbances. A geomagnetic storm starts at Kp5 after which the G-scale is also used.

However, there are a few factors that can affect the visibility of the northern lights, including cloud cover, light pollution, and the strength of the solar wind. If the sky is cloudy or there is a lot of light pollution, it will be more difficult to see the aurora. Additionally, the stronger the solar wind, the more likely it is that the aurora will be visible.

The aurora is not visible during daylight hours.  The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as a 1000 km away when the aurora is bright and if conditions are right.

The aurora is an indicator of the current geomagnetic storm conditions and provides situational awareness for a number of technologies.  The aurora directly impacts HF radio communication and GPS/GNSS satellite navigation.  It is closely related to the ground induce currents that impact electric power transition.
