BERGEN COUNTY, NJ – New Jersey’s ground has been more restless than usual in 2025, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reporting 24 earthquakes so far this year. The latest tremor, a magnitude 2.7 quake near Hillsdale on Tuesday, is believed to be an aftershock from the magnitude 3.0 earthquake that rattled Hasbrouck Heights just days earlier.

Earlier in January, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck near Paramus, adding to a growing pattern of seismic activity centered in Bergen County. According to seismologists, residents should brace for more aftershocks over the next week or two as the earth continues to release built-up energy.

Three Earthquake Clusters in New Jersey

The USGS data shows that New Jersey’s 2025 earthquakes have occurred in three main clusters:

  • Bergen County – Multiple small but noticeable quakes, including the Hillsdale and Hasbrouck Heights events.

  • Randolph – A July swarm brought six earthquakes in just 24 hours.

  • Tewksbury – Likely continuing aftershocks from the magnitude 4.8 earthquake in April 2024.

Historical Seismic Activity in the Region

USGS records show fluctuating earthquake activity in recent years:

  • 2025 – 24 quakes so far

  • 2024 – 234 quakes (mostly April aftershocks)

  • 2023 – 0 quakes

  • 2022 – 3 quakes

  • 2021 – 1 quake

  • 2020 – 3 quakes

Despite the relatively small magnitudes, New Jersey’s old, hard bedrock allows seismic waves to travel farther than in many regions, meaning even mild quakes can be widely felt.

Strong Quakes Rare but Possible

In the New York City metropolitan area, only four earthquakes above magnitude 4.5 have been recorded in modern history. While large quakes are rare, the region remains vulnerable to noticeable shaking. Experts advise that residents stay prepared for aftershocks, secure heavy items in their homes, and remain aware of emergency safety procedures.

With scientists closely monitoring Bergen County, Randolph, and Tewksbury, the coming weeks may bring more tremors. Though damage has been minimal so far, this year’s events highlight the need for earthquake preparedness—even in places where seismic activity is not a daily concern.

  1. It must be climate change. Quakes would’ve been worse without the vaccine.
