Atlantic Highlands NJ, the New Jersey State Police remind boaters Operation Dry Water is a year-round, nationwide campaign to prevent boating under the influence (BUI) and raise public awareness about its dangers.

Boating and alcohol don’t mix. Alcohol’s effects are intensified on the water due to environmental stressors like sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion. These factors impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, dramatically increasing the risk of accidents, collisions, and serious injuries.

In 2024, alcohol was the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, accounting for 20% of all boating-related deaths. Boating under the influence is not only dangerous-it’s a serious crime. In New Jersey, the State Police are responsible for the safety of more than 150,000 registered vessels. During this heightened enforcement and awareness campaign, New Jersey troopers will be actively patrolling the waterways to identify violations and ensure everyone enjoys a safe boating experience.

Don’t let a good time turn into a bad memory. Stay safe and boat sober.
