Blood Type O Negative Shortage
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey and New York are facing a critical healthcare crisis after a historic winter storm brought blood donation efforts to a grinding halt. The New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) and New York Blood Center (NYBC) have officially extended their “Blood Emergency Appeal” for an additional two weeks as inventories plummet to dangerous levels.
The storm, which dumped over 18 inches of snow in some areas, forced the cancellation of all operations this past Sunday. The ripple effect has been devastating: nearly 2,000 donations were lost just as the regional supply had begun to recover from a previous shortage.
“Patients Don’t Get a Snow Day”
This marks the first time in history that the NYBC has been forced to extend an existing blood emergency due to a weather event. While roads are being cleared, the impact on local hospitals remains a major concern.
“This storm could not have come at a worse time,” said Jeannie Mascolino, Vice President of Blood Operations. “We were just starting to rebuild the supply when nearly 2,000 donations were lost in a matter of days. Surgeries, cancer treatments, and traumas don’t stop for the weather.”
The Most Urgent Needs
While all blood types are welcomed, the centers are putting out an urgent “SOS” for specific types that are currently at critical lows:
-
Type O-Negative (O-): The universal donor type used in emergency rooms.
-
Type O-Positive (O+): The most common blood type needed for transfusions.
-
Type B-Negative (B-): A rare type currently in short supply.
-
Platelet Donors: Essential for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
How and Where to Donate Safely
Donor centers across New Jersey and New York are beginning to resume midday operations as parking lots and roads are cleared. If it is safe for you to travel, your donation could quite literally save a life today.
| Donation Type | Frequency | Why it Matters |
| Whole Blood | Every 56 Days | Used for surgeries and trauma victims. |
| Platelets | Twice per Month | Vital for cancer and transplant patients. |
| Double Red Cells | Every 112 Days | Ideal for O-, O+, A-, and B- donors. |

Become an “All Seasons Lifesaver”
To prevent these weather-related “cliffs” in the future, the NJBS is encouraging residents to commit to donating at least once per season. Consistent giving ensures that when the next storm hits, hospitals have a “buffer” to keep operating smoothly.

Pay donors and there won’t be a shortage.
I always wondered why we ‘donate’ the blood so hospitals can bill the patients
