NORTH JERSEY / HUDSON VALLEY — Grab the heavy layers and stay inside if you can. The National Weather Service has issued a dual-threat weather alert for Bergen, Passaic, Rockland, and Westchester counties as a historic arctic blast settles over the region.
Dangerous conditions are expected to persist through 10 AM Monday morning, with “feels like” temperatures reaching life-threatening levels.
The Timeline: When to Stay Off the Streets
The cold is arriving in two distinct phases. Whether you are in Ridgewood, New City, or White Plains, here is the breakdown:
-
Phase 1: Extreme Cold Warning (Now – 1 PM Sunday)
-
The Danger: Wind chills as low as 21°F below zero (-21°F).
-
The Risk: Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
-
-
Phase 2: Cold Weather Advisory (1 PM Sunday – 10 AM Monday)
-
The Danger: Very cold wind chills reaching 14°F below zero (-14°F).
-
The Risk: Prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia and freezing pipes.
-
Impacted Areas: Is Your County on the List?
The warning and advisory cover the high-population corridor of Northern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley:
-
New Jersey: Western Bergen, Eastern Bergen, and Eastern Passaic Counties.
-
New York: Rockland, Putnam, Northern Westchester, and Southern Westchester Counties.
Essential Cold Weather Safety Checklist
With wind chills reaching -21°F, standard winter gear isn’t enough. Follow these critical safety protocols to protect your family and property:
1. For You and Your Family
-
The Rule of Three: Wear at least three layers. A moisture-wicking base, an insulating middle (fleece/wool), and a wind-resistant outer shell.
-
Cover Up: Do not leave your face or ears exposed. Use a face mask, scarf, and hat.
-
Check-In: Reach out to older family members, friends, and neighbors to ensure their heating systems are working properly.
2. For Your Home
-
Pipe Protection: Run a very thin trickle of water from faucets connected to pipes in exterior walls to prevent freezing.
-
Heater Safety: Space heaters should be at least 3 feet away from curtains or furniture.
-
Carbon Monoxide Alert: Never use a generator, grill, or camp stove inside your home or garage.
3. For Your Pets
-
Keep Them In: If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Limit “potty breaks” to a few minutes and wipe their paws to remove salt and ice-melt chemicals.
What Happens Next?
The “Cold Weather Advisory” remains in effect until the Monday morning commute. Expect school delays or transit disruptions if temperatures do not rebound by sunrise. We will continue to provide updates as the National Weather Service releases new data.

Could someone please interview AL GORE and tell him to bring back global warming NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about some of the residents crying because they have to bring the garbage can out to the end of the driveway, can you imagine his employees working out in this weather hanging on a pack of a truck. Dealing with the cold, the wind, snow, ice, rain, what about extreme heat? Let’s give these guys a break. Look what they’re doing
we were only notified that last week rear yard was suspended for that week. NO email notifications of that being extended. your post made me go look at the village website which stated it was suspended until further notice. How come the village manager has NOT sent out an email or text (as of this moment sunday afternoon) He seems to always manage to have his media team do instagram posts but they are severly lacking with respect to important info. Paramus sends text about road closures, whether in advance, or due to construction, mva etc. NOT ONCE have i received usefull info from the village via text (that i signed up for)
since they ‘task’ will be accomplished in 1/2 the required time, the sanitation workers should be put to work on snow removal, specifically in the downtown area clearing sidewalks completely so people can open their passenger car doors. Coordinate with street dept and push snow using small bobcat type equipment
This is Obama’s fault.
Barack Hussein Obama (barry sotero) said ‘climate change’ (new description of global warming) was the most serious threat to the USA .
It’s no one‘s fault, it’s mother nature, but let’s start being smart and taken employee health responsible. For so many years, we have employees getting hurt and even killed on the job in the Village Of Ridgewood we have had employees have heart attacks, or trouble, from employees working extremely long hours straight, no proper rest and food. And employees have even gotten killed working behind the garbage truck so I think it’s time for the new manager and director of the DPW to get serious recording these issues. It’s not 1960 anymore. It’s 2026 so whatever they need to do with rotating shifts, hiring more people, standby, it’s time thank you concerned.
This is nothing new coming from village Hall, they’re always lacking information to the residence. Their lack of communication sucks, nothing new thumbs up, baby.
Grow up all you complainers. It’s common sense to bring your garbage to the curb when there’s so much snow and ice still around, not to mention the bitter temperatures.
my drive has been clear since day one. I PAY for rear yard with my taxes. If i wanted to look at trash cans id move to waldwick. Do you put a chair in the street where you park your car?
Hurray for you!
