NEWARK, NJ — NJ TRANSIT is making it easier for New Jerseyans to kick off their Labor Day weekend getaway with extra trains, buses, and special family-friendly discounts. Starting Friday, August 29, the agency will roll out its “early getaway” service to accommodate travelers leaving work early for the last long weekend of summer.
🧒 Kids Ride Free All Weekend
Families can save big this holiday weekend with NJ TRANSIT’s Family SuperSaver Fare. From 7 p.m. Friday, August 29 through 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, up to two children (ages 11 and under) ride free with each fare-paying adult.
🚄 Friday, August 29: Extra “Early Getaway” Service

Rail: Extra outbound trains between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex, and Main/Bergen/Port Jervis lines. Some trains will be combined or adjusted — check njtransit.com for updates.

Bus: Additional buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and schedule adjustments on more than 24 routes. Routes 137 (Toms River–NYC) and 319 (NYC–Atlantic City–Cape May) will run enhanced schedules through Monday.

Light Rail: Hudson-Bergen, Newark, and River LINE will operate regular weekday service.
🗓️ Weekend Service (August 30–31)

Rail: Regular weekend schedules; plus Meadowlands Rail Line service Sunday evening for the Oasis concert at MetLife Stadium.

Bus: Regular weekend schedules with select added buses. Routes 137 & 319 continue enhanced service.

Light Rail: Normal weekend operations across all three systems.
🇺🇸 Labor Day, Monday, September 1

Rail: Weekend/holiday schedule systemwide, plus one extra Port Jervis–Secaucus/Hoboken express train at 4:05 p.m. Meadowlands Rail Line will also serve MetLife Stadium concertgoers.

Bus: Most routes on weekend schedules; Route 139 (Lakewood–PABT) on a special timetable. Routes 137 & 319 remain on enhanced service.

Light Rail: Adjusted weekend/holiday schedules depending on the line.
🚧 PATH Closure & Cross-Honoring at Hoboken
With the Hoboken PATH station closed from August 28 at 11:59 p.m. through September 2 at 5:00 a.m. for Port Authority repairs, NJ TRANSIT will cross-honor PATH tickets:

Rail: Cross-honoring at Hoboken, Secaucus, Newark Penn Station, and New York Penn Station.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: Cross-honoring available, with connections to PATH at Newport and Exchange Place.

Bus: Regular service will continue at Hoboken Terminal’s interim bus terminal, but no cross-honoring will be offered via bus.

Allow extra travel time, especially on bus routes near the Lincoln Tunnel and Garden State Parkway.

Buy round-trip tickets ahead through the app or ticket machines to avoid delays.
