Secaucus, NJ – Great news for commuters and event-goers in the Tri-State area! The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors has taken a decisive step forward on a key infrastructure project, authorizing significant funding to complete the engineering and design work for the Secaucus to Jersey City segment of the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway.
This ambitious project aims to create a crucial, environmentally friendly public transportation link between three major hubs: the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex, Secaucus Junction Station, and Jersey City.
The Funding and the Future
During its monthly meeting on December 11, 2025, the Board of Directors approved $22.2 million (plus 10% for contingencies) for Phase 2—Transitway Jersey City. This funding extends the current contract with engineering firm HNTB, allowing them to finalize the detailed design stage.
NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Fran O’Connor highlighted the significance of the move: “Advancing this innovative project is an important step in providing the kind of superior service befitting our customers and the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex, a world-class entertainment venue.”
A Two-Fold Benefit: Capacity and Connectivity
The overall Transitway project has two core objectives:
-
Increased Capacity: Phase 1 focuses on improving service capacity to efficiently move massive crowds between MetLife Stadium (Meadowlands) and Secaucus Junction Station, particularly during major events.
-
New Corridor Creation: Phase 2 is about adaptive reuse—utilizing existing NJ TRANSIT right-of-way (specifically the former Boonton rail line and the Bergen Arches) to create a brand-new service corridor through one of North Jersey’s most densely populated areas.
NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri emphasized the economic and environmental benefits: “This critical initiative supports New Jersey’s economic growth while providing new transportation options for residents and visitors…”
Building for a Sustainable Tomorrow
The Transitway is not just about connecting locations; it’s about building a sustainable future. A core mandate of the project is that the transit modes considered must be capable of:
-
Being implemented with zero-emission vehicles (or easily transitioning to them).
-
Being scalable to fully autonomous vehicle operation as industry technology evolves.
By transforming an underutilized right-of-way into a modern, green transit link, NJ TRANSIT is making a vital investment in regional mobility and environmental stewardship.
