Fair Lawn NJ, a Hoboken-bound NJ Transit train was involved in a collision with a late-model Honda Civic at the Fair Lawn Avenue railroad crossing in Fair Lawn, NJ on the afternoon of Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Despite sustaining severe rear-end damage, the driver of the Honda Civic fled the scene, leaving behind the car’s bumper with license plate and detached trunk lid in the roadway. The impact caused a 30-minute delay on the Bergen County Line, according to NJ Transit’s website.
Driver Fled Scene, Later Located by Police
Shortly after the incident, Fair Lawn Police Department contacted the registered owner of the Honda via phone. The driver, who was reportedly uninjured, told officers they were traveling southbound on the Garden State Parkway en route to their home in Edison, NJ.
The investigation was officially taken over by the NJ Transit Police Department, which reportedly planned to send a patrol unit to the driver’s residence for a follow-up investigation.
No Injuries Reported on Train
There were no reported injuries to the train crew, and as of the scene response, it was unclear if any passengers were aboard the train at the time of the incident. Fair Lawn Police were the first to respond and assisted NJ Transit Police in securing and investigating the scene.
Ongoing Investigation by NJ Transit Police
The circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the driver did not remain at the scene, are still under investigation. NJ Transit Police have not yet released a formal statement on whether charges will be filed.

Following the crash, NJ Transit posted an alert for approximately 30-minute delays on the Bergen County Line. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of railroad crossing safety and the legal obligations of drivers involved in traffic collisions.
