Once upon a time, I thought everything about food could be learned from a Mary Higgins Clark suspense novel.

It started with the lavish dinner of watercress salad, lamb loin chops and “piping hot” asparagus “under a delicate hollandaise” that Dr. Edgar Highley, the villain in Clark’s early novel “The Cradle Will Fall,” prepared for himself as he recalled all the women he had murdered.

Then there were the swanky Washington, D.C., parties in another early book, “Stillwatch,” with buffets of caviar and sturgeon, Virginia ham and “hot biscuits.” And the steak sandwiches that characters were always ordering from the Manhattan Irish pub Neary’s.

The first character the reader meets in Harlan Coben’s new novel is none other than Kat Donovan.

A shout out, perhaps, to a well-known local politician?

Ridgewood resident Harlan Coben will release his new novel, “Missing You,” on Tuesday, March 18. Coben will sign copies of “Missing You” during an appearance at Bookends scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19.

Strike that thought.

Known for his penchant to include people and places from close to home, Coben insists that it is a mere coincidence the protagonist in “Missing You,” which officially hits bookstore shelves March 18, shares a similar name with the Bergen County executive. And as one proceeds deeper and deeper into the thriller, Coben’s assertion becomes strikingly true.

For starters, Kathleen Donovan is the head of Bergen’s executive branch of government. Kat Donovan, as the reader quickly discovers, is involved in law enforcement, a detective with the New York City Police Department who is haunted, almost equally, by the uncertain truths behind her father’s murder and the mysterious past and whereabouts of an ex-fiancé.

North Jersey bookstores write new chapters into their business models

* Owners diversify to stay competitive

To combat intensifying competition from technology-based rivals, North Jersey independent bookstore owners are writing new chapters into their business models by hosting author events, offering tech-driven reading options and providing consulting services for school districts.

The introduction of e-readers, tablets, websites such as Amazon.com and large wholesale stores selling steeply discounted books has increased competition for independent bookstores over the last decade, forcing remaining book vendors to look for new ways to add to their bottom line.

“Bookstores need to study their past and analyze it thoroughly,” said Mary L. Brown, the owner of Books Bytes & Beyond in Glen Rock. “We asked ourselves how we could service the people we are close with better.”

Bookends, an independent bookseller that has been in downtown Ridgewood for 30 years, moved from its original location in 2010 to lower its rent and focus on hosting author events to boost revenue.

“Our author events are typically attended by 50 to 2,000 people, depending on who the author is,” said Bookends co-owner Walter Boyer, whose wife, Pat, books the authors.

Boyer said Bookends hosts up to 100 author events a year and the money earned from customers buying signed copies of the books makes up one-third of the store’s yearly revenue.
