Partisan Divide in Senate Leaves Critical Employees Without Pay During Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON D.C.—A major legislative effort to guarantee pay for active-duty military members and essential federal employees working through the ongoing government shutdown was blocked by Senate Democrats on Thursday.

The measure, known as the Shutdown Fairness Act of 2025, was sponsored by Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and would have immediately funded paychecks for critical workers. The bill failed on a mostly party-line 54-45 vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance.

Elon Musk’s Federal Employee Ultimatum: Respond or Be Terminated

Washington DC, Tech billionaire Elon Musk has issued a second warning to federal employees—either respond to an email outlining their accomplishments, or face termination.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Musk clarified:

“Subject to the discretion of the President, they will be given another chance. Failure to respond a second time will result in termination.”

This directive, however, contradicts guidance from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which has stated that responding to the email is voluntary and failure to do so does not equate to resignation.
