KILLER OF KATE STEINLE FOUND NOT GUILTY OF MURDER

Kate Steinle

December 1,2017
by Kevin Ryan

San Francisco Ca, Jose Inez Garcia Zarate, the illegal immigrant who shot and killed Kate Steinle in San Francisco in 2015 as she walked on a pier with her father, has been found not guilty of murder. The San Francisco jury only found him guilty of a single gun possession charge.

Garcia Zarate, 45, a felon with 7 prior convictions related to heroin possession and manufacture, had been deported from the U.S. 5 times, yet kept sneaking back in. He was actually released from custody by San Francisco authorities just 2 months before the shooting, despite an order from federal immigration authorities requesting the city keep him in custody so they could pick him up and deport him.

San Francisco is a “sanctuary city” that does not cooperate with federal authorities on locating and deporting illegal immigrants. Garcia Zarate admitted to going to San Francisco to take advantge of its sanctuary city status. The case sparked national outrage and debate over sanctuary cities as well as border security.

He had faced 15 years to life on a second-degree murder charge in the Steinle shooting, though jurors, 3 of which were immigrants themselves, were also allowed to consider first-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. His defense argued that the gun, which he claims to have found in a dumpster, had gone off accidentally. The gun was later found to have been stolen.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired a broadside at so-called “sanctuary cities” Monday, telling reporters local policies of noncooperation with immigration authorities are “dangerous” and will cost communities federal funding.

In the Trump administration’s most pointed warning yet, Sessions said federal law allows withholding of federal funding to sanctuary cities, and signaled that such measures will soon be taken. Sessions, who took the podium at White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s regular media briefing, warned of a pending crackdown by the administration.

“Such policies cannot continue,” he said. “They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the street.”

Man arrested in connection with San Francisco killing had been deported several times, officials say

The man arrested in connection with the seemingly random killing of a woman who was out for a stroll with her father along the San Francisco waterfront is an illegal immigrant who previously had been deported five times, federal immigration officials say.

Further, Immigration and Customs Enforcement says San Francisco had him in their custody earlier this year but failed to notify ICE when he was released.

“DHS records indicate ICE lodged an immigration detainer on the subject at that time, requesting notification prior to his release so ICE officers could make arrangements to take custody. The detainer was not honored,” ICE said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Kathryn Steinle was killed Wednesday evening at Pier 14 — one of the busiest tourist destinations in the city.

Police said Thursday they arrested Francisco Sanchez in the shooting an hour after it occurred.

On Friday, ICE revealed their records indicate the individual has been previously deported five times, most recently in 2009, and is from Mexico.
