R.H.S. Boys Track & Field: Ridgewood’s Dublirer brothers

There was a time when the Dublirer brothers were leaving for an important meet, and their dad sent them off by saying, “Have a nice run.”Storm and Luke recoiled and told dad with no uncertainty that they were out to win for Ridgewood High School, not just run.

“They owe that [attitude] to Mike Glynn, their coach,” the father, Rob Dublirer, said recently.

The family name, which has an Austrian derivation, stands out in track circles. The last few years, there has been a Dublirer or two running well for the Maroons in cross-country and/or track. The brothers ran together for a while as teammates with outstanding success and have done so individually as well.

With Storm having graduated RHS in 2013, Luke continued the family legacy this past school year before graduating in June.

“They are two of the best middle distance runners I’ve ever coached,” said Glynn, who is about to begin his 49th cross-country season (15th at Ridgewood). “They’re absolutely wonderful kids, and they’re more similar than not.”

Glynn wasn’t sure what he had each time a Dublirer arrived for freshman year.

Ridgewood Girls Lacrosse: Defender Katie Bourque already in ‘Green zone’

The speed of the game of lacrosse increases with each level of play, but Katie Bourque has more than kept up with the adjustments. In fact, the Ridgewood High School rising junior is way ahead on the upward climb.

Last year, as a mere sophomore, she had proven enough as both a student and an athlete to put herself into position as a prime recruit of the Dartmouth College Big Green.

“I’m committed to the process, but technically, I’m not fully committed to admissions,” the 16-year-old defensive standout explained. “If I hold up my end with my grades, I will be committed. The coaches there were very interested.”

Senior spotlight: Yurina Harada of Ridgewood

SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
THE RECORD

As a youngster, Yurina Harada was determined to become a gymnast, but she may have had second thoughts once she got up on the balance beam.

“It still scares me to be on the beam,” Harada said with a laugh as her senior year at Ridgewood approaches. “It has always been my hardest event, but I like it more now.”

Previously, Harada’s most difficult struggle was convincing her mother to allow her to sign up for gymnastics in the first place.

“My mom put me in ballet when I was 6,” Harada said. “I was a little ballerina, but then I went to a birthday party.”

The party was held at a gymnastics club, where she was fascinated by the trampoline and other gear. There, the idea for a change in activities was spawned.

“My mom tried to talk me out of it,” she said. “She showed me a video about how intense gymnastics was, but that made me like it even more.”

Since then, Harada has blossomed into a two-time North Jersey all-around selection. Last year, she recorded the season’s highest floor exercise score (9.675) by a North Jersey gymnast during the state championships, where she tied for first place.

Her wariness on the beam has not been easy to overcome. “I wasn’t really comfortable until the beginning of this year,” the 5-foot-3 standout confided, crediting a switch of training clubs for her improvement.

It’s the floor exercise where Harada has become most comfortable. There, she’s a combination of a ballerina’s grace and an athlete’s power.

“Once I started doing double-backs on the floor, I began to enjoy it more because it was a skill that came pretty easily,” she said.

As a three-sport athlete at Ridgewood High School, Jonathan Davila is familiar with navigating a busy schedule.

So it’s no surprise that the rising senior — a key member of the Maroons’ football, basketball and track teams — has continued his hectic routine into the summer, shuttling from working out at the gym to serving as an instructor at the RHS basketball clinic to taking part in football practices.

The regimen will only get busier as the school year begins for Davila, who is expecting to take on bigger roles for each of the three teams.

“I’m really looking forward to being a leader,” Davila said in an interview Monday evening.

He happens to be a part of three teams that will experience significant roster turnover in 2014-15 due to graduation, which places a greater emphasis on him becoming an influential senior.

But RHS head basketball coach Mike Troy said Davila is ready for the role.

Ridgewood’s Nicole Parks Named to  Ridgewood News All-Suburban Softball Team

RIDGEWOOD — An historic softball season in The Ridgewood News All-Suburban area had it roots in the Big North Freedom Division.

Led by undefeated Bergen County and State Group 3 champion Indian Hills (34-0), four teams from the division combined to produce nine of the 18 players on this year’s first team. The Braves supplied four, Northern Highlands three, and Ridgewood and Paramus one each.

Bergen County runner-up Immaculate Heart (31-2) leads all schools with five representatives, and its Big North United Division rival Paramus Catholic placed one among the 13 seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman. Ramsey, Midland Park and Hawthorne garnered one spot apiece.

A whopping eight players repeat on the top squad, led by Steph Thomas of IHA, who completed the All-Suburban “cycle” with her fourth first-team bid. The three-time overall honorees are IHA’s Rachel Pollard (2012-14 first team) and Daniella Ibarra (2012 Sophomore of Year, 2013-14 first team) and Ridgewood’s Nicole Parks (2012 second team, 2013-14 first team).

So deep was the talent pool this spring that four others repeat on the second team: Ridgewood’s Kelly Skettini, Ramsey’s Jess Juhlin and Fair Lawn’s Sam Colca (2013-14) and Paramus’ Kelsey Settecasi (2012 and ’14).

Hallie Donofrio of Waldwick is the Sophomore of the Year, while Northern Highlands’ Chris Broking is the Coach of the Year…..

NICOLE PARKS, Ridgewood — This senior right-hander finally was able to put her full pitching arsenal on display and led the Maroons (20-7) to an eight-win improvement over last season. A first-team outfielder in 2013, she showed no signs of the ankle injury that kept her out of the circle and came back with an 18-6 record, 0.86 ERA and .155 opponent’s batting average. She struck out 249 in 150 innings and threw four no-hitters (including a perfect game against Bergenfield), upping her career mark to 24-9 with five no-hitters. Bound for the University of Albany, she hit .375 with three home runs, 22 RBI and had a .648 slugging percentage.

The Ridgewood High School boys 4-x-800-meter relay team returned from the New Balance Outdoor Nationals with national recognition as well as local pride after earning All-America honors with a relay performance that also claimed the top spot in Bergen County record books.

The quartet of sophomore Michael Thurston and seniors Brian Collins, David Frering and Luke Dublirer clocked 7:39.57 to finish fifth in the race last Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. St. Xavier (Ohio) placed first in 7:37.26.

The top six finishers in each event earned All-American status at the meet held last Friday through Sunday.

“Being All-American, that will last forever,” RHS head coach Josh Saladino said Monday. “It was nice to see the kids just enjoying the accomplishment that they were able to achieve.”

The Maroons also reclaimed the county record in the event, which they had surrendered just 10 days earlier.

The squad ran the relay in 7:44.09 at the June 4th State Meet of Champions (SMOC) in South Plainfield, surpassing the county 4-x-800 mark it set last season. However, Bergen Catholic edged out the Maroons in that race, running 7:42.95, to take not only the gold medal but the Bergen record as well.

The Ridgewood High School boys baseball team fell short of the championship aspirations it had set before this season, but the squad didn’t finish the year without adding a few more signature victories for a senior class that has experienced its share of them.

The Maroons’ 16 seniors can cherish the program’s first victory over Don Bosco in a decade and a deep run into the North 1, Group 4 state tournament.

“We did have some great wins, and we had some tough losses,” RHS head coach Kurt Hommen said Monday. “We had a very experienced team, a team that’s played together for a quite a while.”

Ridgewood finished 16-10, overcoming a rough early stretch in which it lost 4-of-5 by a combined score of 35-16 to drop its record to 4-4.

Ridgewood Crew wraps up season at Nationals

JUNE 6, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2014, 12:31 AM

Ridgewood Crew wrapped up another winning season with one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championships, held at Mercer Lake in West Windsor over Memorial Day weekend.

The Ridgewood Crew women’s varsity 4X boat captured silver medals at the SRAA National Championships and Stotesbury Cup Regatta. From left: juniors Bridget Callaghan and Julia Hefferon and seniors Emma Brickfield and Amanda Criscitiello.

Remarkably, this final regatta for Ridgewood High School seniors Maeve Cannon and Sophie Noel capped a two-year win streak in the women’s lightweight double for this dynamic duo — a feat virtually unheard of in the rowing community.

Illness and poor weather conditions prevented senior Joseph Criscitiello, who rows the men’s 1X scull, from participating in the last three regattas. His sister Amanda, a triplet, rows in the women’s varsity 4X boat and captured silver at Nationals and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, as well as a bronze at the Philadelphia City championships (a.k.a. “Cities”).

Any notion that the Ridgewood High School girls lacrosse team did not meet expectations this season shows just how high a pedestal upon which the program stands.

Freshman Hannah Cermack, left, is congratulated by senior Anna Jorgensen after scoring the game-tying goal late in the North Group 4 state final against Ridge on May 28. The Maroons overcame a four-goal deficit but fell just short of their sixth straight sectional title, as the Red Devils prevailed, 11-10.

Although the Maroons lost in the North Group 4 state title game to Ridge, 11-10 — ending a streak of five straight sectional championships — the team finished the year with a 16-5 record against the toughest competition the state had to offer and also claimed another Bergen County tournament title.

“They should be very proud of what they accomplished throughout the season,” RHS head coach Karla Mixon said Tuesday. “I know it was a heartbreaker. We expected to go a little bit further, but it just wasn’t our day.”

After trailing at the half of the May 28 sectional final, 8-4, Ridgewood nearly pulled off an improbable comeback, tying Ridge at 10 on a goal by freshman Hannah Cermack with just over two minutes left. But the Red Devils responded with a goal 22 seconds later to hold off the surging Maroons.

Ridgewood Boys Track and Field: sets record with sectional title

The large group of seniors leading the Ridgewood High School boys track team will never know what it’s like to finish anywhere other than the top spot at the North 1, Group 4 state championships.

That’s perfectly fine with them.

“This team wanted to be part of history,” head coach Josh Saladino said. “They knew if they won this that the seniors would have left here never losing a state-sectional championship. This is our fifth in a row.”

RHS scored 104 points to win by a comfortable margin over second-place West Orange (77) at the event held last Friday and Saturday in Randolph. The fifth straight title is a meet record and put the Maroons one behind the overall North Section 1 mark of six straight titles held by Glen Rock, the North 1, Group 1 champ from 1999 to 2004.

Last weekend, senior Luke Dublirer delivered the signature performance for the Maroons, capturing victories in the 800- and 1,600-meter races, anchoring the 4-x-800-meter relay team to a gold medal and running a leg for the third-place 4-x-400 relay.

“I don’t remember the last time we had an athlete put together a performance at the sectionals the way he did with three gold medals and a bronze,” Saladino said. “That’s a lot of high-level performances in a very short span. Luke’s always had a lot of talent, and he was able to showcase it this week.”

In the 800, Dublirer’s time of 1:56.57 bested that of Jhonathan Matamoros from Memorial (West New York) by 1.17 seconds, and he crossed the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of the Tigers’ anchor in the 4-x-800.

MAHWAH – For at least a little while, it looked like the No. 1 Ridgewood High School girls lacrosse team might not bring home another Bergen County championship last Saturday.

Ridgewood seniors Devon Maltz, left, and Darby Kiernan kiss the Bergen County championship trophy after the Maroon girls lacrosse squad claimed the prize for the 10th time in as many tries.

But that possibility dissipated when the stubborn storm clouds threatening to postpone the tournament final at Mahwah High School dispersed, and the Maroons were able to show that they remain the best team in the county by a wide margin.

After lightning delayed the start of the game by about an hour, Ridgewood wasted no time in taking control, scoring the first seven goals on its way to a 17-3 victory over second-seeded Immaculate Heart to capture the school’s 10th straight county championship. The streak includes two North Jersey Invitationals (2005-06) and eight Bergen County tournaments (2007-present).

“It’s so good to celebrate as a team, because making history like this means a lot,” senior captain Darby Kiernan said.

ALLENDALE — The first week of the season went according to plan for the Ridgewood High School baseball team, the No. 6 squad in The Record preseason Top 25: three games, three wins by a combined score of 33-14 over Hackensack, Clifton and Ramapo.

Senior catcher Nick Coppola was involved in a pair of run-scoring rallies for Ridgewood in Monday’s Big North Freedom Division baseball game at Northern Highlands.

Since then, things haven’t been so easy for the Maroons, who dropped three of their next four and dipped to No. 14 in the rankings.

“We’ve been struggling, and the last couple games have been tough ones for us,” RHS head coach Kurt Hommen said following Monday’s 8-5 loss at Northern Highlands.

Making the recent troubles even tougher to swallow is that each of the three losses have come against Big North Freedom rivals — Indian Hills, Paramus and Northern Highlands — dropping Ridgewood’s record within the division to 2-3.

“We’re going through a bit of a rough stretch,” said senior shortstop Nico Symington, who is committed to play at Tulane. “We just have some things we need to clean up.”

RIDGEWOOD – In its first major test of the young season, the Ridgewood High School boys track and field team responded by taking home the Division A championship at last week’s Jack Yockers Bergen County Relays.

The Maroons matched the lofty expectations placed on them prior to the season by finishing in the top four in 15-of-16 events to score 112 out of a possible 160 points and edge second-place Old Tappan by 11 points for the title.

“What excited me about the team was that we rose to expectations,” said RHS head coach Josh Saladino. “We were the No. 1 team in North Jersey in The Record’s rankings going into it, so the pressure was on our guys and they responded.”

The victory marked the second straight year the Maroons won the meet.

“We were the defending champions, and the kids went into this meet with the expectation and the goal to defend their County Relays championship,” Saladino said. “The kids have been through it before. They knew what to expect.”
