Ridgewood High School varsity wrestling team win their second straight District 6 team championship.

Ridgewood Nj, For the second year in a row, the Ridgewood High School varsity wrestling team enjoyed a very successful post season, winning their second straight District 6 team championship.  This is the second time in school history that the team has won this tournament.  With this effort the team sent a record nine medal winners to the Region 2 tournament.  District medal winners were third place finishers Roger Toral at 126 lbs. and Nick Saglimbeni at 132 lbs.;  and second place finishers Austin Purritano at 170 lbs. and Michael Antosiewicz at 285 lbs. *

The team also had five District Champions, the most they have had in a year in RHS history.  The 2014 District 6 champions were Joe Oliva at 138 lbs., Stephen Gerdner at 145 lbs., Kyle Inlander at 182 lbs., Andrew Moras at 195 lbs. and Sukmin Yoon at 220 lbs.

Congratulations also go to Joe Oliva for his second place finish in the Region 2 tournament.  This is Joe’s fourth straight top-three finish in the Region 2 tournament and his fourth straight qualification for the NJSIAA individual state tournament.  This is a feat that has never been accomplished by an RHS wrestler.
Torre Watson is the varsity coach.

* Another third place finisher at 160 lbs. does not have permission to be named.

THE RECORD

There’s an old saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That’s very true of the Ridgewood squad that was The Record Boys Indoor Track Team of the Year.

No individual Ridgewood athletes made All-North Jersey First Team or Second Team and nobody was selected All-Bergen First Team.

Yet the Maroons were the best team in North Jersey, with an overwhelming victory at the Big North Freedom meet and a seven-point win in the Bergen County Relays large school division. And despite losing by seven to West Orange in the Group 4 sectionals, the Maroons were still worthy of the honor.

“When some of our better athletes didn’t perform up to expectations, others stepped up,” Ridgewood coach Josh Saladino said. “Maybe our best performances came after a bad meet as our kids rebounded from meet to meet.”

PARAMUS – Joe Trovato of Paramus hasn’t spent a lot of time on the mat this season with his favorite workout partner.

“Not since we found out we were going the same weight this year,” Trovato said of his friend Joe Oliva from Ridgewood.

But the two put aside their friendship for nearly seven minutes Saturday. And it was Trovato who came out on top, scoring a takedown on the edge midway through the first overtime to score a 3-1 victory in the highlight bout of the night at 138 pounds and win his second Region 2 wrestling championship in three years.

“This was a huge match for me,” said Trovato, a two-time state fifth who improved to 36-1 this season. “This is a huge confidence boost going into the state tournament next week.”

SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
THE RECORD

FAIR LAWN – It took a lifetime for Ridgewood to win its first District 6 wrestling title. It took just a year to get the second, thanks to a senior class that helped turn around the program over their four years.

Five Maroons were named champions, four of them seniors, as Ridgewood won the team title going away. Perhaps the biggest of those wins came from senior Andrew Moras, who knocked off defending champion Zach Hunko of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook at 195 pounds.

Down 4-1 late in the second period, Moras escaped and got a quick takedown to tie it at 4-4 entering the third period. He scored a reversal with 1:28 left in the period to grab the lead and added a late takedown to insure his 8-5 victory.

“I just had to get a feel for how he was wrestling,” Moras said of his first district title. “It was a pretty repetitive match, and he was trying to toss me. All I had to do was put my weight back and I was able to slip right out.”

“This senior class has been amazing,” Ridgewood coach Torre Watson said.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Maroons unearthed the one jewel that was missing from their Triple Crown last season.

Ridgewood High School won the 2013 North 1, Group 4 and Bergen County Relays titles for boys indoor track but wound up second in the Big North Freedom Division.

Monday at The Armory Track Center in Manhattan, Ridgewood reclaimed the top spot in the division with a convincing 178-82 1/2-70 victory over Indian Hills and Hackensack at the Big North championship meet. The Maroon girls team scored 72 1/2 points to place fourth.

“Considering Hackensack won [the Freedom title] last year, the boys were anxious to get back out there and go after it,” RHS head coach Josh Saladino said.

THE RECORD

NEW YORK – Nearly five hours of competition in the first four divisions of the Big North meet Monday night led to several conclusions:

1. Ridgewood has an outstanding and deep boys team.

2. Zack Bazile of St. Joseph and Chris Estrella of Ridgefield Park are very, very good athletes who not many may have heard of yet, but everyone may be talking about them by the time this season is over.

3. The rest of the divisions have at least two very good teams.

The Ridgewood boys team scored the only runaway win of the night, taking command of the Freedom Division in the meet’s second event and going on to a 178-82 1/2 win over Indian Hills. They were joined by Bergen Catholic (United), Ramsey (Patriot) andRidgefield Park (American) as boys teams winners.
