Ridgewood’s Fourth of July festivities to highlight Star-Spangled Banner

JUNE 30, 2014    LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2014, 11:27 AM

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner, Ridgewood’s Fourth of July festivities will kick off with a version of the song not usually heard – all four verses – and an interpretive dance accompaniment.

When the Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee approached Yendi Anderson, secretary for the Ridgewood Division of Engineering, about singing the National Anthem, dancing was not part of the deal.

But the village employee said her research of the song’s history moved her to perform the music as well.

In 1814, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write what would become the National Anthem as he watched the 15-star, 15-stripe American flag fly over Fort McHenry in the aftermath of an attack of the Baltimore harbor during the War of 1812.

“Some of the soldiers that were held were praying that the flag would never touch the ground,” Anderson said, retelling what she had learned. “When some of the soldiers died, others would come and keep the flag up. It’s a very, very powerful story … and some things are better expressed through dance.”

Folding chairs have begun lining the curbs of Ridgewood, which can mean only one thing: The Fourth of July is just around the corner.

A tradition for village residents, the annual marking of one’s territory along the July Fourth parade route starts two weeks in advance of the holiday.

“The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the people and events surrounding its composition, will be remembered this year, with the anthem serving as the parade’s theme.

In addition, the Ridgewood Historical Society will display a copy of a Currier and Ives print titled “The Star Spangled Banner” in the Schoolhouse Museum as part of the festivities.

While the parade is free, the annual fireworks display at Veterans Memorial Field that evening is not.

July Celebration, Inc., an all-volunteer community group. All aspects of this annual
Celebration including fireworks, bands, evening performers, insurance, and police and
fire personnel are funded by voluntary contributions from businesses and individuals.

This year we’re excited to announce that The Ridgewood Historical Society in their
Schoolhouse Museum has a copy on display of a beautiful Currier and Ives print entitled “The Star Spangles Banner”. Lady Liberty crowned with an American crest bears the American flag as she points forward to victory. The fires of the battle burn in the distance– presumably the defense of Fort McHenry by American forces during the British attack on September 13, 1814 (in the War of 1812) that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner. Several phrases from the song The Star Spangled Banner serve as the title printed in the lower margin: “O! long may it wave,/ O’er the land of the free,And the home of the brave.”

Part of the mission of the Ridgewood Historical Society, which operates the
Schoolhouse Museum, is to design exhibits using artifacts that tell the stories about ou
history, culture, and the lives of ordinary people from Ridgewood and the surrounding
