Ridgewood reinforced its goal to provide a “rich and challenging education in a safe learning environment” to district students with the release of an updated mission statement.

At a Board of Education (BOE) meeting last Monday, Nancy Stern, of Sousa and Stern Educational Consultants LLC, presented the results of the September community planning session, at which the mission statement was created. The session brought together members of the Board of Education, district administration and other leaders of the community for the four-hour collaborative brainstorming process.

“It was really a very thought-provoking day,” said BOE president Sheila Brogan.

Ridgewood first contracted with the consultants in 2011 to lead this creative planning session as a way to make a long goal review process quicker and more inclusive, district officials said. The consultants recommended that districts update their goals every three years – instead of the state’s recommended five years – to keep up with quickly changing technology and policies.

“You gave the community an opportunity to participate,” Stern said, praising the district for having nearly two dozen residents show up at the Sept. 13 session. “Not every district does that.”

2014-2015 Budget Information
Taking effect this year, the Ridgewood Board of Education has opted to move the annual school board elections from April to November, thereby eliminating the public vote on the proposed general tax levy if it is at or below the statutory tax levy cap. Since next year’s proposed budget falls within the mandated cap, it will not be put to public vote.

Reader says Never before have the Ridgewood BOE and municipal budgets ever been stretched so thin

Never before have the Ridgewood BOE and municipal budgets ever been stretched so thin. During each of those waves in Ridgewood’s growth you mention above the BOE was still able to maintain their buildings and absorb the growth that resulted from these apartments. That is no longer the case. Our budget cannot afford to repair our current buildings, hire more teachers or build more classrooms. Unless you are looking for another $48 million dollar bond referendum in less than 5 years.

As a parent, I am tired of paying taxes and then being told that I need to raise money to pay for an outdated and unsafe playground, or new risers to replace the unsafe 30 year old ones for my child’s vocal concert or buy non-fiction books to fill the classroom libraries. All of that was covered by our BOE budget before years and years of this gradual growth.
All this growth also occurred before our streets were so filled with cars that even the traffic experts say we can’t handle one more car on our streets. I’m not sure how many pedestrians were hit by cars back then, but I’m guessing it was less than half the number we have today.

The point is, what is being proposed is a change to the Master Plan which would allow for enormous and sudden growth. Nothing like what you outlined above.

Jersey City BOE limits public comments at meetings – Will Ridgewood follow suit?

Jersey City BOE limits public comments at meetings – Will Ridgewood follow suit?
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

The Jersey City school board approved a measure this week that significantly curtails when residents can speak at board meetings and stops recording those comments on video, actions critics say are an effort to silence them.

The changes force all speakers to notify school officials at least one day in advance if they want to make general comments or speak on a specific agenda item. Previously, notice was only required for general comments.

The measure also prohibits any speaker from speaking more than once, as opposed to once for an agenda item and once for a general comment. Instead of two sessions of public comment that act as bookends to the monthly meetings, there will be one instead.
