the fly has heard claims that the Maroons Soccer Clubs business practices fall far short …….
The fly has learned that many in town claim the Maroons organization that provides the competitive youth soccer program for Ridgewood, is currently being run as a personal fiefdom by Paul Boogaert (President) and others on the Board of Trustees. Sources say a few self-serving Trustees run the organization as they please, for their own personal gain or to protect their (and some of their fellow Trustees’) personal interests.

If you don’t know the Maroons are a 501(c)(3) organization, co-sponsored and heavily supported by Ridgewood, serving hundreds of our town’s families. The odd thing is all these people who never played a sport are suddenly clamoring to be on the board of the travel soccer program in town? Is it just a thirst for local power or as critics have called it joining the “sports mafia” . Some join boards to protect there child or some say promote their child at the expense of yours .

Sources claim the Maroons Board has engaged in improper elections aimed at stacking the Board ; many “red flag” financial irregularities ;improper (and undisclosed) Board compensation; self-dealing ; conflicts of interest and interested party transactions. The Board even let the 501(c)(3) lapse yet the when questioned the Board has been known to bring in lawyers . These are serious allegations that a simple audit would put to rest .

Ridgewood incurs costly damage from recent flash flooding

Reader says Predictable, predicted, horrendous

This will be the LAST storm ever, though…right?

Another $119,865 to repair 2 turfed fields + $48,000 for turf on Maple Field (no longer Park, so let’s admit it and change the name). Plus who-knows-what in change orders.

Deductible is $25,000! That must have been somebody’s great idea to save money on the insurance.

We are going to go broke over this fiasco. It even failed a referendum but it happened anyway. Sickening waste. Meanwhile people are literally starving all over the world.

The turf MUST GO. It’s either now or later. Now is better. But nobody can admit to making a mistake. Well, this was a huge one.

Ridgewood incurs costly damage from recent flash flooding

Bubbles pop up on the Ridgewood High School field after a quick but powerful rainstorm led to flash flooding throughout the village last Friday.

Last Friday’s flash flood is costing the school district and municipality hundreds of thousands of dollars in cleanup costs.

The Board of Education (BOE) received authorization from the Bergen County Department of Education this week to award a bid to LandTek for $119,865 for “emergency repair” of two district-owned artificial turf fields.

Business Administrator Michael Falkowski said there was “extensive” damage at Ridgewood High School and Stevens fields following the Aug. 1 storm and that the playing grounds are “not useable” in their current state.

The money will come out of the 2015 district budget and possibly an emergency reserve fund, he said.

“This is just for the fields,” Falkowski said. “There’s other work that needs to be done,” including general cleanup of the area.

Revolution in the Air? Glen Rock grassroots group fights turf plan there

Just south of The Wood, yet another grassroots group is fighting yet another multimillion-dollar bonded turf project.

It’s happening all over. (Just saw this; was away last week.) I had a feeling that the huge number of people in Glen Rock who were against that turf project from the start weren’t going to accept their council’s decision not only to let it go through but also, adding financial insult to bad-politics injury, to pay for 90% of the $3 million with tax money instead of 0%, as the sports groups once promised–while promising to raise the funds, which they failed to do.

Last Chance to Fight Turf Field

Sign the petition tonight, June 17 at Starbucks

Many Glen Rock citizens are dismayed with the Mayor and Council’s recent decision to pass a $3,000,000 bond ordinance–without a citizen-wide vote–to fund the synthetic turf athletic field project and accompanying commercial sports complex at Faber Field (which is to include restrictive fencing, unsightly billboards and lighting and revenue-producing commercial concessions and non-resident field rentals).  If you are concerned about the preservation of Glen Rock’s peaceful parkland, cooling green open space, and natural grass fields that are available to all Glen Rockers, please consider signing our Citizen Petition.  You can read a copy of the petition below, and if you are both a Glen Rock resident and registered voter, you may join us in this challenge by signing a hard copy of this document at the following locations both today and tomorrow:

Tuesday June 17th at the Starbuck’s Glen Rock from 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Thank you.
