Buffett Affirms Junk Food, Citing Lack of Smiles at Whole Foods
by Noah Buhayar ,Sonali Basak

Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is the largest investor in Coca-Cola Co. and owns See’s Candies, affirmed his confidence in the market for sugary treats, even as the health costs of sweets become better known.

Buffett, 84, told shareholders at Berkshire’s annual meeting Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska, that happiness is important to longevity and that consumers enjoy Coke products.

“I don’t see smiles on the faces of people at Whole Foods,” he said, citing a grocery chain known for offerings such as almond butter and organic frozen blue curled kale.

Whole Foods low-price makeover pays off as profit tops estimates

Whole Foods Market Inc.’s makeover is paying off.

After cutting prices in a bid to shake its reputation for expensive groceries, the company on Wednesday posted first- quarter sales that rose 10 percent. And even while selling its wares for less, Whole Foods still managed to produce profit that topped analysts’ estimates.

“This quarter shows they can lower prices and not kill their margins,” said Brian Yarbrough, an analyst at Edward Jones & Co. in St. Louis. “They’re going to continue to see pressure there.”

Investors cheered the news, sending the shares up 3.1 percent to $55.16 at 4:39 p.m. in late trading in New York.

Whole Foods has been forced to lower prices, particularly on produce, because of increasing competition in the organic- food market from the likes of Kroger Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. So far, the strategy is working. Sales at Whole Foods stores open at least 57 weeks rose 4.5 percent in the quarter through Jan. 18, up from a 3.1 percent gain in the prior period. Same-store sales in the current quarter were up 5.1 percent through Sunday, showing the momentum has continued.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS  — Whole Foods is recalling two pre-packaged salads sold in three northeastern states due to a mislabeling of allergens.

The mini four-ounce containers of pre-packaged Caesar salad and Mesclun goat cheese salad were sold on July 8 in stores in New York, New Jersey (excluding Princeton, Cherry Hill and Marlton), and Connecticut (excluding Glastonbury, West Hartford and Bishop’s Corner).

The company says allergen warnings were mistakenly switched on the two items. The Caesar salad package now contains a warning about tree nuts, when it should contain a warning about fish and egg allergens, while the Mesclun salad contains a warning about fish and egg allergens.
