RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A quiet Sunday morning in the Village was interrupted by the screech of tires and the crunch of brick as a vehicle plowed into a local storefront.

At approximately 9:00 AM on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Ridgewood emergency crews responded to a “single vehicle into a building” crash at the busy intersection of Chestnut Street and Franklin Avenue. A late-model Toyota RAV4 reportedly lost control, jumping the curb and striking the facade of a popular Japanese cuisine restaurant.
The Scene: Slippery Roads and Superficially Damaged Sushi
The intersection, a central hub for Ridgewood diners and shoppers, was quickly cordoned off by the Ridgewood Police Department Patrol Division.
Key Details from the Incident:
-
Weather Factors: Overnight snow and freezing temperatures had left North Jersey roads notoriously slick. Authorities believe slippery road conditions were a primary factor in the driver losing control.
-
Property Damage: The RAV4 wiped out a street sign before hitting the restaurant’s facade. Fortunately, the damage to the building was described as superficial, though a full structural inspection is standard procedure.
-
No Injuries: In a stroke of luck, neither the driver nor any pedestrians were injured. The restaurant was closed at the time, preventing potential casualties inside.
Emergency Response
The Ridgewood Fire Department and EMS (FMBA Local 47) were on-site within minutes to ensure there were no structural collapses or fuel leaks. The RAV4 sustained significant front-end damage and had to be removed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck.
Winter Driving Reminder
With more winter weather expected throughout January, Ridgewood officials are urging motorists to:
-
Reduce Speed: Speed limits are for ideal conditions; ice and slush require much slower travel.
-
Increase Following Distance: Give yourself triple the normal space to stop.
-
Check Your Tires: Ensure your treads are prepared for the “Jersey Slush.”
