As a piece of Ridgewood property has continued to sit in limbo for the past year, the issue seemingly comes down to money.

Neighbors in favor of a park with lots of trees are making some financial steps, while those in favor of a large baseball field for the older athletes are considering others.

But, since making an initial step toward a grant to stabilize the Schedler house’s roof at the urging of some neighbors, the village – which officials say is currently not in a position to fund any changes to this property – is holding off on future movements.

Eastside neighbors of the Schedler property on West Saddle River Road, who want to both preserve the roughly 200-year-old Schedler house currently languishing on the property and create a family park, are now creating a 501(c)(3) to collect donations from “Friends of the Historic Zabriskie-Schedler House and Family Park.”

“Probably in a month or two we should have that running,” Ridgewood Eastside Development (RED) leader Isabella Altano said last week. Altano is an architect from that neighborhood who is in favor of preserving the house.

  1. I wonder if the residents who want to preserve the house will fall for the same line that our Mayor gave them this election.when

  2. This Council and VM will stall this project until the house falls down from decay and mold or it burns down. That the plan because the house is standing in the way of the baseball fields.

  3. “are now creating a 501(c)(3) to collect donations” How long has this been going on? What took this group so long to start this 501?

  4. How the heck does the Village spend millions on a piece of property and then just let it sit for years without doing anything with it? Everyone in town knows we need some more park space and some fields. Why don’t we just lay something out similar to the Horse Farm property which has both passive and active use and get moving on it? This is starting to look like the parking issue which the town has now been stalling on since the 1940’s.

  5. How the heck does the Village pay for all this and a parking garage and still pour money into the house park on the westside is the better question? Spend now and let future residents pay for it like the federal government.

  6. The house looks like something from a Stephen King novel.

  7. “Friends of the Historic Zabriskie-Schedler House and Family Park.” What a joke. That group drank the Mayor’s kool aid when he was was running for re-election now they are playing catch up. Thats alright ” Friends” another election is coming up. Drink up!

  8. The house is typical old construction. Each new addition was at a different level. If it is to be used for anything in the future, it must be ADA compliant with an elevator. This is possible at a reasonable cost? Also, high fencing would be required on the side edging on Rt 17N for the safety of both athletes and drivers. It also would be necessary to provide a safe way for walkers and bikers to reach the field. Currently it is totally inaccessible except by car. It also borders on West Saddle River Road which is a road so narrow it cannot even have a stripe down the middle. I believe it would cost a fortune to make it usable.

  9. This house would make a good Paul Aronsohn re-elections campaign HQ for 2016.

  10. I say turn it into a large meditation center, no cell phone or tablets allowed, just lots of humming and plenty of civility. Plant bamboo all around the perimeter.

And put a big flashy electronic sign at the entrance admonishing all who enter to be civil OR ELSE.

  11. The creeps at village hall will burn it down just like they did with the original Lester house when people wanted to save it…. Too expensive and it’s cheap to hire an arsonist…..remember that folks? Short memory?
