RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is firing back at Democrats, accusing them of spreading blatant misinformation in a recent political ad attacking Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) over Medicaid reforms.

The controversy centers on a $200,000 ad campaign by the left-leaning group Unrig Our Economy, which portrays “Theresa” — presented as an average New Jersey mom — voicing concerns about alleged Medicaid cuts. But according to reports, “Theresa” is actually Theresa Grimm Luoni, a longtime Democrat activist with a history of opposing Republican health care reforms.

Activist Framed as Everyday Voter

Breitbart reports that Luoni has repeatedly spoken at rallies and town halls for high-profile Democrats, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA). Her social media posts and speeches often use the same talking points featured in the ad, warning of “cuts to Medicaid” she says would harm vulnerable communities.

In a June 2025 op-ed, Luoni accused lawmakers who support Medicaid reforms of “committing a massacre on the most vulnerable citizens” to fund “tax breaks for billionaires.”

NRCC Pushes Back

Republicans say the ad is deceptive, misrepresenting both Kean’s record and the nature of recent Medicaid legislation.

“Inflammatory and false ads like this one make it blatantly obvious that Democrats have nothing but lies,” said NRCC Spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole. “Tom Kean Jr. is fighting every day to protect vital programs like Medicaid for those who need it, and voters aren’t deceived by Democrats’ pathetic spin.”

The NRCC maintains that the One Big Beautiful Bill, supported by Kean, preserves Medicaid access while implementing cost-control measures designed to protect the program’s long-term stability.

High Stakes in NJ Politics

New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, where Kean is running for re-election, is expected to be a battleground in 2025. Both parties are using health care — and specifically Medicaid — as a central talking point to sway undecided voters.

As the campaign heats up, fact-checkers and political watchdogs are urging voters to scrutinize the sources behind political ads and verify claims before heading to the polls.

  1. Dems lie, all day, all the time. It’s what they do; they know it. We need citizens to wake the hell up and pay attention to the never-ending hypocrisy.
