JERSEY CITY, NJ — Federal investigators say a smokey fire that forced the evacuation of a crowded PATH train in Jersey City earlier this month was likely caused by electrical arcing on the tracks, according to a preliminary report released Wednesday.
Blaze Erupts Under PATH Train at Journal Square
The incident occurred as a New York-bound PATH train was leaving Journal Square, carrying about 200 passengers. A conductor spotted flames under one of the cars and immediately stopped the train, allowing riders to evacuate.
Social media videos captured the frightening scene — vivid flames and thick black smoke filling the station as panicked commuters rushed to safety.
19 People Injured
Authorities confirmed that 15 passengers and 4 PATH employees suffered minor injuries during the emergency. All were treated and released.
NTSB Launches Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has examined the track, third rail, and station infrastructure, in addition to reviewing security footage and conducting witness interviews.
While the electrical arcing discovery is a key finding, officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
Hoboken PATH Closure for Track Repairs
In related news, the Hoboken PATH station will shut down for five days starting tomorrow for scheduled track maintenance, according to the Port Authority. Riders are urged to plan alternate travel.
