Dan Gutman puts out a lot of saccharine garbage for children. The schools appear to be devoting a substantial portion of their book-buying budget into buying as many of his lowest-common-denominator volumes as they can get their hands on. Seriously-he is almost a one-man wrecking crew when it comes to numbing our childrens brain cells into submission. His motivation is almost certainly that of making as much money as he can as soon as he can, so I don’t think he’s a bad guy or malevolent or anything. That said, I will be very pleased to hear when we lose sight of the taillights of his driver’s Escalades down Ridgewood Avenue, past the duckpond and heading toward points east. Thank heavens he’s not a Ridgewood resident.
To the anon with the caustic remarks:
I’m sorry your childhood was terribly lacking in Dan Gutman and that you refuse to let him into your heart. May you eventually realize how baseless your accusations are and what a positive influence the great literary genius Dan Gutman is in our world. I, personally, thank him for giving my little brother a small (but growing) taste for reading.
My students and I love the variety of Mr. Gutman’s books. He writes in different genres including fantasy, historical fiction, realistic, adventure and funny….. This is what has attracted so many different types of readers to his books. Can’t wait for the newest books to come out!
