“I’m having a wonderful life,” said artist Nancy Petrie. This amazing 94-year-old is exhibiting her watercolor and pastel paintings at the Cottage Place Gallery of the Unitarian Society, where she has been a member since 1958.

“Cottage Place is a lovely street and it’s home – right across from my church,” said Petrie. She lives at the nearby Cottage Place Senior Residence, one of the two S.H.A.R.E. (Shared Housing Association for Ridgewood and Environs) houses in the village.

Petrie’s husband Carl died five years ago and two years later she moved to her current home. “It was almost like coming home,” she said. “It never occurred to me that I would be part of the S.H.A.R.E. community.”

“It’s half way between living in your own home and assisted living,” she explained. “It’s a home for independent seniors in Ridgewood.”

Ridgewood residents question much-ballyhooed highway commercial zone (HC) district

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

A handful of Ridgewood residents protested the adoption of a pair of ordinances that will ultimately impact the future of two separate and undeveloped properties in the village.

The village appropriated funds last week to purchase a vacant lot that abuts the Schedler property.

The Village Council last week approved the much-ballyhooed highway commercial zone (HC) district and the appropriation of $100,000 for the purchase of the vacant lot that abuts the 7-acre Schedler property.

Both moves were made by the governing body after years of discussion and consideration of the potential changes each might make on Ridgewood’s face along the Route 17 corridor, as well as the impact on residents.

The HC zone encompasses two parcels along Route 17, a vacant lot known as the Burroughs property and the current Ridgewood Commons area. Property owner Malvern Burroughs last year applied for rezoning to develop the 2.4-acre wooded lot, which is located near the intersection of Paramus Road and Linwood Avenue and adjacent to Route 17 south.

5 Housing Markets Where Renting Beats Owning
By AnnaMaria Andriotis

In theory, plummeting home prices and record-low interest rates should make buying a home cheaper than renting one. But experts say in some parts of the country, it still pays to be a tenant.

Despite the incentives to buy now — namely that average rates on a 30-year mortgages are now 3.7% — sales of single-family existing homes slipped 1.5% in May from a month earlier, according to data released today by the National Association of Realtors. Experts say the drop, which came during the historically busy spring season, suggests the housing market has a way to go to recover. If anything, the ranks of American homeowners are dwindling. The homeownership rate in the U.S. fell slightly from 66% to 65% during the first quarter of 2012 — the lowest in 15 years, according to the latest data by the U.S. Census. (It peaked at just over 69% in 2004.)

Renters, meanwhile, have more inventory to choose from as owners who are unable to sell their homes often have no choice but to find tenants, says Dan McCue, research manager at Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. The number of single-family homes for rent or being rented grew by two million units from 2006 to 2010, according to a JCHS report released this month, and McCue says the number has likely grown since then. “One third of all rentals are single-family homes,” he says.

Teacher tenure changes pass unanimously in NJ Senate

Many of the last hurdles were removed yesterday from what now seems like all-but-certain passage of a tenure reform law for New Jersey that would make it harder for teachers to gain tenure and easier to lose it.

The Senate passed the bill sponsored by state Sen. Teresa Ruiz (D-Essex) with a remarkable 39-0 vote, the Republicans’ unanimous support virtually assuring that Gov. Chris Christie will support it as well.

There remains a different Assembly version, but Ruiz met yesterday for a half-hour with state Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan Jr. (D-Middlesex), the Assembly’s education chairman and sponsor of that bill, to work out differences.   (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

Top Ten Reasons ObamaCare is Unconstitutional

8989386 large1

As the Supreme Court prepares to render its decision on ObamaCare, I wanted to take a moment to once again express my opposition to this legislation. As I mention in my address, here are the top ten reasons ObamaCare is Unconstitutional.

If upheld, this law will fundamentally alter the meaning of liberty in our country and pave new ground for the government’s ability to intrude on your personal life. As Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, I will continue to fight for our freedoms every day in the House of Representatives.
Sincerely,
Scott Garrett

Top Ten Reasons ObamaCare is Unconstitutional

1) Exceeds the Scope of the Commerce Clause – The purpose of Congress’s power to regulate commerce among the states was to end interstate protectionist measures and establish a national free trade pact. The Constitution does not give Congress the power to create commerce in order to regulate it.

2) Threatens the Notion of Limited Government – The individual mandate would be a grant of limitless legislative and regulatory power. This violates the doctrine of enumerated powers in which Congress is given few and specific legislative powers.

3) Imperils Religious Liberty – ObamaCare forces religious institutions to provide services that violate their faith.

4) Rewrites Contract Law – The individual mandate renders the purchase of health insurance to be compulsory. For centuries, it has been understood that a contract is valid only if all parties voluntarily and mutually assent to its terms

5) Charges a Financial Penalty to Regulate Behavior – ObamaCare imposes a financial penalty on those that fail to purchase health insurance. The Constitution does not grant Congress an independent power to tax for the general welfare and may not use taxation as a means to regulate activity, unless that regulation is authorized by the Constitution.

6) Imposes an Unconstitutional Tax – The Obama Administration asserts that the financial penalty is a tax. However, this “tax” does not satisfy the three types of taxes – income, excise, or direct – listed as valid in the Constitution. The penalty is not assessed on income so it is not a valid income tax. The penalty is not assessed uniformly and is triggered by economic inactivity so it is not a valid excise tax. Finally, ObamaCare fails to apportion the tax among the states by population, and therefore is not a valid direct tax.

7) Erodes Federalism – ObamaCare’s expansion of Medicaid is of such an enormous degree that states are coerced into compliance or risk abandoning the poor. ObamaCare would deny all Medicaid funds for noncompliant states.

8) Infringes Upon the Reserved Powers of the States and the People – The Tenth Amendment reserves powers not granted to the federal government to the states and to the people. Nowhere in the Constitution is Congress granted the power to compel the purchase of a product as a condition upon legal residence in the United States.

9) Neither Necessary nor Proper – The Necessary and Proper Clause grants Congress the means to execute its enumerated powers and adds no additional powers to the legislative branch. The regulation of inactivity cannot be necessary and proper in executing the powers of the Commerce Clause.

10) It’s Not Just Unconstitutional – ObamaCare will increase taxes and healthcare costs, destroy new jobs, add to the national debt, burden both small and large businesses with new regulations, and violate the founding principles of a republic expressly founded to secure the blessings of liberty.

Ridgewood Library e-book checkouts for April 2012 were up 419% when compared to April 2011

62% of Library Users Don’t Know They Can Check Out E-Books [STUDY]
by Andrea Smith

As reading habits shift from printed to digital ink, public libraries are struggling to raise awareness of their digital offerings.

The introduction of tablets and dedicated e-book readers has changed the way we read. Now, you’re just as likely to find fellow commuters or waiting-room dwellers reading an e-book as a physical one.

While our libraries are busy trying to keep up with the rise of e-books, it turns out their patrons don’t know there are e-books available for lending.

Some 62% of respondents to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project’s latest library survey said they didn’t know if their library offered e-book lending.

In reality, three-quarters of public libraries in the U.S. offer this service. The problem is, not enough people are taking advantage of it, or even know about it.

In fact, only 12% of Americans over the age of 16 who read e-books say they’ve borrowed one from the library in the past year….

Librarians like Chris Yurgelonis, Assistant Director at the Ridgewood Public Library in Northern New Jersey are working hard to change those patterns. She tells Mashable e-book checkouts for April 2012 were up 419% when compared to April 2011. That might be because of an aggressive awareness campaign she and the rest of the staff have implemented….

Unlike the 2,000-Death Count in Iraq, ABC, NBC, PBS, MSNBC Skip 2,000 Marker in Afghanistan
By Tim Graham | June 21, 2012 | 17:45

On June 13, the CBS Evening News devoted a story by David Martin to the Afghanistan death count reaching 2,000, as Martin interviewed a mother of a fallen Marine. CBS was alone. There was no story last week on the Afghanistan death “milestone” on ABC, NBC, the PBS NewsHour – or even on the MSNBC programs found in Nexis, including Rachel “Our Military’s In a Perilous Drift” Maddow.

But the networks were all more aggressive when the 2,000 mark arrived in Iraq on October 25, 2005. The Big Three networks devoted 14 morning and evening news stories to the death toll from October 24 through the end of October, and another 24 anchor briefs or mentions. They used the number to spell “disaster for this White House.”

RHS senior Emilie Louizides wins Varian Fry humanitarian award

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Today, nearly 200 Cambodian children, who might otherwise be begging on the street or searching for food in dumps, are getting an education. And that’s partly because of Ridgewood High School (RHS) senior Emilie Louizides.

Emilie receives a hug from her friend, Roat, at the Ridgewood Village School in Cambodia.

As a former co-president of the Cambodia Rural School Project at Benjamin Franklin (BF) Middle School and one of the leaders of the RHS Cambodia Club, Louizides helped build a school in a rural Cambodian village.

The “Ridgewood Village School,” which was completed in 2009, now serves more than 180 children in a country still recovering from a genocide that took place in the 1970s.
