Angry public wants treason charges for media leaks
June 19, 2012

The Washington Examiner
@SecretsBedard

A clear majority of Americans believe the media is jeopardizing national security when publishing intelligence leaks, but the degree of anger depends on their political bent.

According to Rasmussen Reports, 82% percent of conservative voters think publishing secrets hurts national security, a view shared by 68 percent of moderates but only 56 percent of liberals.

In a poll that damns the media and the administration, 72% of likely U.S. voters say the leaks undermine national security. Rasmussen adds that only 14% believe the media is providing a public service when it releases that information.

Most importantly, some 51% of voters said leaking classified documents is an act of treason, bolstering congressional and Justice investigations into leaks that led to stories about the killing of Osama bin Laden and the high-tech raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

New Handicapped Parking Area for Ridgewood July Fourth Fireworks

New Handicapped Parking Area for Ridgewood July Fourth Fireworks

The handicapped parking area for the Ridgewood Fourth of July fireworks has been moved to the parking lot at the corner of Meadowbrook Avenue and Northern Parkway. This move was necessitated by an increase to the safety zone surrounding the fireworks.

Disabled patrons may be dropped off at the parking lot behind Veteran’s Field, located at Fairway Road and Northern Parkway. Vehicles will then need to park in the lot at Meadowbrook Avenue and Northern Parkway.

Please be aware that the vehicles may not be able to return to pick up the disabled patron until after the other patrons have left Veteran’s Field. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic following the fireworks is always heavy and there may be a significant delay when bringing your car from
Meadowbrook Avenue and Northern Parkway back to Fairway Road and Northern Parkway. The disabled patron should expect to wait before they are able to get back to their car following the fireworks.

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee has worked closely with the Ridgewood Police and Fire Departments as well as our fireworks exhibitor, Fireworks Extravaganza, to plan a safe evening for all of our patrons. After many meetings and great discussion, this was the
safest and best option for all involved.

Ridgewood Police Department cracks down on drivers, caught violating crosswalk laws

The Ridgewood News

If waterfowl could pay fines, Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward might have ticketed the ducklings that jaywalked themselves into a storm drain last month. But alas, the laws in town apply only to the pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists who share the roads, not necessarily to birds.

“Had they been crossing in the crosswalk, there wouldn’t have been a problem,” Ward quipped, noting that he was conducting his usual pedestrian safety checks that morning.

Village residents can expect a beefed-up law enforcement presence now through the end of summer as the Ridgewood Police Department cracks down on anyone, particularly drivers, caught violating crosswalk laws.

PSE&G gets green light on major transmission upgrade

Public Service Electric & Gas yesterday won regulatory approval to upgrade its transmission system, a project that could cost up to $390 million and cut through 15 municipalities in Morris, Essex, Union, Somerset, and Middlesex counties.

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities unanimously approved the project, the latest in a series of transmission upgrades planned by the state’s largest electric utility in a program that will lay out $3.5 billion in capital expenditures over the next several years.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

Ridgewood NJ, The long delayed opening of the RHS/Stevens field bridge may finally be at hand . Ridgewood Schools Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said at Monday night’s BOE meeting that the bridge will be open in time for the Ridgewood High School  graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 21.

RHSBridge theridgewoodblog.net

file photos of RHS Bridge

The bridge connects Stevens Field to the main RHS campus and RHS Stadium . The bridge was found to be structurally damaged in late 2009. In November of 2011 the bridge was finally shut down to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Repairs cost the BOE  approximately $85,000 .

The RHS bridge has been closed since November due to serious structural problems. Years of flooding, wear and tear and old age had finally taken its toll.. Repairs began in May , and as work proceeded it became apparent that the bridge needed far more work than originally anticipated. Bad weather and construction related delays have also  pushed back the project.

Pilot Plan to deploy refueling stations for compressed natural gas

In a step that reflects a goal of the state Energy Master Plan, regulatory officials yesterday approved a pilot program to allow a utility to spend up to $10 million to build compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling stations in its service territory.

The state Board of Public Utilities approved the one-year pilot proposed by New Jersey Natural Gas to build between five and seven CNG refueling stations at companies that plan to convert a portion of their fleets to run on the fuel, as well as provide opportunities for the public to fill up their natural gas vehicles.   (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

New Jersey bill on dismissing tenured teachers advances

A New Jersey Senate panel advanced changes to tenure laws that would make it easier for administrators to fire ineffective public-school teachers.

The measure, sponsored by Senator Teresa Ruiz, a Democrat from Newark who heads the Senate Education Committee, was approved unanimously today by the chamber’s budget panel. Governor Chris Christie, a 49-year-old Republican, has pushed for similar changes since last year.

“We have been supportive of Senator Ruiz’s efforts on tenure reform and will await the final bill,” Michael Drewniak, a Christie spokesman, said by e-mail.   (Dopp, Bloomberg)

U.Va. research: Arguing kids could have benefits
Monday – 6/18/2012, 7:57am ET
By SAMANTHA KOON
The Daily Progress

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Though parents have been teaching their children not to argue with adults for generations, new research from the University of Virginia shows that young teenagers who are taught to argue effectively are more likely to resist peer pressure to use drugs or alcohol later in adolescence.

“It turns out that what goes on in the family is actually a training ground for teens in terms of how to negotiate with other people,” said Joseph Allen, a U.Va. psychology professor and the lead author of the study, results of which were published in a recent edition of the journal Child Development.

Allen said that parents are often “scared to death about peer pressure,” but also frustrated by argumentative children.

“What we’re finding is there’s a surprising connection between the two,” he said. Allen noted that teens “learn they can be taken seriously” through interactions with their parents.

“Sometimes, it can be counterintuitive to tell parents to let their teens argue with them,” said Joanna Chango, a clinical psychology graduate student at UVa who worked on the study. In fact, learning effective argumentation skills can help teenagers learn to “assert themselves and establish a sense of autonomy,” she said.

The Grecian Formula for Economic Decline

Grecian Formula theridgewoodblog.net

The Grecian Formula for Economic Decline
Amy PayneJune 18, 2012 at 9:04 am(11)

The President and his team have been blaming “European headwinds” for some of the U.S. economy’s woes. But the truth is that the policies pursued by Washington and Athens are frighteningly similar—and the outcomes are not good for either country. Both countries are in need of comprehensive fiscal reforms, yet their leaders have avoided the tough decisions in favor of bailouts and political posturing.

In yesterday’s election, political parties supporting Greece’s bailout secured a narrow victory, causing Europe and world markets to breathe a temporary sigh of relief. The parties must now form a coalition government, despite continued protests from the radical party that sought to throw out the terms of the bailout assistance—which could have led Greece out of the euro currency. At 22 percent unemployment, Greek voters expressed disappointment with their limited options.

The Greek crisis was foreshadowed in this year’s Heritage Foundation/Wall Street Journal Index of Economic Freedom, with Greece registering the largest decline in economic freedom of any country in the world. Its economy is rated “mostly unfree,” and it has the fifth-lowest economic freedom score in Europe, beating only Russia and three former Soviet republics.

Why is it in such a state? The authors of the Index point to “decades of overspending, a lack of structural reform progress, and endemic corruption,” noting that Greece’s “lack of competitiveness and fading business confidence are serious impediments to economic revival. Adjustments in market conditions have been stifled or delayed by public unions.”

Sound familiar?

It should, because the similarities between the U.S. and Greece are alarming. Two years ago, Heritage’s J.D. Foster said that “We’re not Greece…yet.” Since he wrote that in May 2010, however, U.S. debt has nearly doubled as a share of the economy. Greece’s public debt, at 165 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), doesn’t seem that unreal any more.

A few other points of comparison: The U.S. corporate tax rate is higher than Greece’s. The Index of Economic Freedom pegged America’s overall tax burden at 24 percent of total domestic income, while Greece’s overall tax burden was 30 percent of GDP. Government spending inAmerica—42 percent of GDP—approaches Greece’s government spending level, which exceeds 50 percent of its GDP.

Both countries have structural economic deficiencies—like tax rates and labor regulations—that are causing deeply rooted problems. And both countries have tried to solve their fiscal problems through bailouts, to no avail.

Though it goes back to the adoption of the euro in 1999, the European crisis first broke into the open some 10 years later. In April 2009, the European Union told France, Spain, Ireland, and Greece to reduce their budget deficits in the wake of the credit crisis. Since the crisis began, Europe has substantially weakened its banking system, which is propped up only by central bank cash and shaky bailouts.
Now, defaulting on loans is a real possibility for Greece and other European nations. They have too long dismissed the need for economic growth in favor of government intervention.

Going into the G20 summit today and tomorrow in Mexico, President Obama “has called on European leaders to recapitalize weak banks and to focus on economic growth and not just budget austerity,” reports Reuters. Basically, he has been urging European governments to spend more now, even as their borrowing costs and debt far exceed sustainable levels. One wonders how countries that have limited or no access to credit markets because of their dire fiscal situations are supposed to borrow the money for all this additional spending. There is only one substantive difference between Obama’s policies for Europe and his domestic policy, where he has urged expanding government jobs as a solution to U.S. unemployment: The U.S. government can still borrow to finance its deficits, because we’re only partway down the road the Greeks have already traveled.

The overspending, overtaxing, over-borrowing and over-regulating approach does not work for Europe any more than it works for America.
To deal with any European financial fallout that might affect the U.S., we have to stop embracing the same policies. Congress and the President should rein in federal spending immediately by choice rather than being eventually forced to do so, as countries across Europe have been. They should declare a regulatory cease-fire and disarm the Taxmageddon threat.

America is responsible for its own economic problems, regardless of the winds sweeping across the Atlantic

Business groups pan entrepreneur’s tax  ie…millionaire’s tax, see hope for tax cut compromise

Business advocates had equally strong reactions to two tax proposals from Democratic legislators that emerged on Thursday: in favor of tax cuts and opposed to a millionaire’s tax.

Assemblyman Louis D. Greenwald (D-Voorhees) said there would be an Assembly proposal to set aside $183 million for property tax cuts, although they would depend on the state meeting administration revenue projections. A Senate Democratic spokesman said the Senate would also make tax cuts dependent on reaching revenue goals.  (Kitchenman, NJBIZ)

Trenton continues practice of skimming hundreds of millions of dollars in utility taxes

It is once again looking like it’s “wait ‘til next year” for New Jersey’s mayors.

The budget deal hashed out by Democratic-controlled legislators last week will continue the practice of skimming hundreds of millions of dollars in utility taxes supposed to help municipalities provide tax relief will be used to balance the annual spending plan.

The move angered local officials who had made a big push to end the practice, or at the very least, take less during legislative hearings on the Christie administration’s proposed budget for next year, which begins July 1.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

Google reports ‘alarming’ rise in censorship by governments

Search engine company has said there has been a troubling increase in requests to remove political content from the internet

There has been an alarming rise in the number of times governments attempted to censor the internet in last six months, according to a report from Google.

Since the search engine last published its bi-annual transparency report, it said it had seen a troubling increase in requests to remove political content. Many of these requests came from western democracies not typically associated with censorship.
