Crossing Guard Hit by SUV in Paramus: Police Issue Summonses After Driver Claims They ‘Did Not See’ the Guard

PARAMUS, NJ – A frightening incident unfolded Monday morning, September 29th, when a Paramus crossing guard was seriously injured after being struck by an SUV while on duty. The guard was immediately hospitalized, highlighting the immediate and significant dangers faced by those protecting pedestrians and students in our communities.
The accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. at the busy intersection of Forest and Howland Avenues.
The Incident: Unsafe Turn Leads to Collision
According to Deputy Chief Frank Scott of the Paramus Police Department, the incident involved a 2025 Subaru Forester driven by a 79-year-old Paramus resident.
The driver was making a left turn onto Forest Avenue when the vehicle struck the crossing guard. At the time of the collision, the guard was taking all necessary safety precautions:
- The guard was standing in the middle of the road.
- They were wearing a high-visibility safety vest.
- They were holding the issued stop sign in the air, signaling traffic to halt for a pedestrian crossing the street.
The driver reportedly told police they “did not see the guard” before making the turn.
Injuries and Legal Action
The injured crossing guard was quickly transported to The Valley Hospital in nearby Ridgewood. Fortunately, police confirmed that the injuries sustained were non-life-threatening.
Following an investigation, the driver of the SUV was issued motor vehicle summonses by the Paramus Police Department, alleging:
