Paramus NJ, the Fairway supermarket in Paramus and Woodland Park are expected to remain open for now .The struggling New York supermarket chain has emerged from bankruptcy with a reorganization plan that leaves the New York company with less debt, $50 million cash on hand, and new private equity owners.
The company, announced its reorganization plan last month, and was able to negotiate agreements with its lenders to reduce its debt by $140 million and trimmed its annual debt service obligation by up to $8 million.
The reorganization plan, was approved by the bankruptcy court last month, and took effect Sunday. Sterling Investment Partners, the private equity firm that bought the family-owned Fairway chain in 2007, and took the company public, has been replaced by a new group of investment firms.
Fairway currently has 15 stores, and will be closing a store in Lake Grove, on Long Island.
The Paramus Fairway opened in 2009 and the Woodland Park store opened in 2012, both were part of Sterling’s plan to expand into the suburbs , some would suggest over expand and to make Fairway a regional chain.
Not sure what everybody sees in Fairway.
Went once never went back.
When they first opened they had some good prices. Now, not so much.
I love their bread and cheese. Produce is not so great.
They have the best cashiers – Stop and Shop should learn from them.
acme is the worst
Bread and cheese; the bikini diet.
Can’t stand Fairway’s produce so I push my cart fast through the first room. They have wonderful cheese (including fresh ricotta), a wide variety of homemade pasta, good meat section (with butchers), imported items that I can’t find anywhere else, pieces of high-grade baking chocolate, and more. You just have to know what to look for there and you can do well.
You can do well in Stop & Shop too.
They have organic fruits and veggies. At reasonable prices.
I agree about the pricing being great at the beginning but not so great now. They are very clever in how they make the store enticing, with their great bread, cheese, and coffee areas. Still, what’s the alternative? Whole Foods? Too expensive. Kings? Same. Acme? Poor quality. Stop n Shop? Same.
Their produce is stacked high and does not sell well. Produce prices not good.
They keep rotating the old, overripe fruit to the top. Stop and Shop does not have great fruit but it is often better than Fairway.
Stop and Shop’s produce prices are usually better.
And then there is Trader Joe.
Shop rite in Oakland is good. As is that farmer’s market by the DMV.
