Paterson NJ,  on Saturday, May 3, the Diocese of Paterson held its 25th and final Blue Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, concluding a cherished tradition that began in 2000 to honor fallen law enforcement officers.

While this marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new one. Monsignor Geno Sylva announced that starting next spring, the Diocese will host a “Guardians Mass”, a broader celebration recognizing police officers, firefighters, and EMTs alike.

“I borrowed the idea from Cardinal Dolan,” said Sylva, referring to Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, who previously merged Blue and Red Masses to honor all first responders together.

The final Blue Mass was attended by hundreds of officers, multiple color guards, and the stirring sound of bagpipes and drums. Though this specific Mass is ending, the spirit of gratitude and community will continue.

Honoring the Fallen

As in past years, the Mass remembered those who gave their lives in the line of duty. This year’s service paid tribute to:

  • Sergeant Joseph Azcona (Newark PD)

  • Officer Jose Valentin (Paterson PD)

  • Trooper II Marcellus E. Bethea, Major Jeffrey Burke, and Sgt. James J. Puhalski (New Jersey State Police)

Sgt. Azcona was fatally shot on March 7 while investigating illegal firearms in Newark. His brother, Jonathan Reyes, attended the Mass and expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support.

“It’s been tough,” Reyes said. “So many came by and told amazing stories.”

A New Chapter: The Guardians Mass

Scheduled for the first Saturday of May each year, the Guardians Mass aims to preserve the legacy of the Blue Mass while embracing all public safety professionals.

“We want families to know that we haven’t forgotten them,” said co-founder Richard Reyes.

Lt. Louis Spagnola, whose father helped start the Blue Mass tradition, emphasized the ongoing commitment:

“We want families to know we are here if they need anything.”

Though the Blue Mass is ending, the message remains clear: their sacrifice is remembered, honored, and celebrated—now and always.

  1. Thank you so much for your story on the 25th Blue Mass for Law Enforcement. It is important for the public to know that we will always remember those we lost. The families are so appreciative when they come to the mass. -We are looking forward to next year’s Guardian Mass – June Fiduccia, Blue Mass Coordinator.
