Ridgewood NJ, Paterson’s school business administrator, Richard Matthews, has announced his resignation to accept the same position in Ridgewood, where he will receive a higher salary.

Career Move and Salary Increase

Matthews, who has served as Paterson’s school business administrator since 2017, was set to earn $212,990 this year. However, he will now be earning $221,400 in Ridgewood, according to a resolution approved by the Ridgewood Board of Education last week.

District Comparisons

The Ridgewood school district serves approximately 5,500 students and had an operating budget of around $108 million for the 2022-23 academic year. In contrast, Paterson’s district serves 24,750 students with a budget of $778 million last year.

Superintendent’s Statement

Paterson Superintendent Laurie Newell issued a statement regarding Matthews’ departure, stating that his last day in Paterson will be September 20.

“While we are saddened to see Mr. Matthews leave, we respect his decision and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Newell said. “We will embark on the process of identifying and appointing a highly qualified successor who will continue to uphold the fiscal integrity and strategic financial planning necessary for the success of our students and staff.”

Reunion with Ridgewood Superintendent

Matthews will be rejoining Ridgewood Superintendent Mark Schwartz, with whom he previously worked during the 2016-17 academic year in Rockaway Borough. Matthews declined to discuss his departure from Paterson, citing a family member’s illness.

Board Members’ Reactions

Paterson Board of Education members expressed surprise at Matthews’ resignation and wished him well in his new role. Board president Manny Martinez assured that the district will conduct an extensive search for a replacement.

“Fortunately, we have some very experienced and qualified internal folks in our business office who can hold down the fort,” Martinez said.

Vice president Kenneth Simmons acknowledged the challenge in finding a suitable replacement.

“The pickings are very slim when it comes to business administrators,” Simmons said.

  4. He sounds like a smart guy. What bothered me was that the superintendent said at the last meeting that he has worked with this guy before. When will we stop this napotism of hiring from personal networks and open up the search for everyone?
It’s kinda repeat of the mayor hiring his puppet for village manager position.

    1. We have no idea who else they considered/interviewed, but this happens all over. It is not always a bad thing. He worked with the guy for a year so he has a good idea of what he can bring to the table.

And I think insinuating in the title that he left for the raise is wrong. It is less than a 5% bump in salary.

    2. Hey moron, nepotism is not hiring from personal networks.

  5. Well, look at the street department, they hire all the friends of the foreman. 90% of them are from Midlandpark. Look how many employees that work for the villager Ridgewood or for Midlandpark. Very interesting. Isn’t it? Oh your friends with this one? OK we will hire you. No credentials, no experience, You wonder why the quality of work. And it’s not like they’re sending employees to school anywhere. They just hand out titles to employees with no training. No certificates , what a joke.
