The core issue was the widespread 1992 electrical engineering exam cheating scandal that implicated over 130 midshipmen in Sherrill’s class and ultimately led to the expulsion of roughly two dozen cadets and the high-profile resignation of the Naval Academy’s superintendent. Sherrill’s statement suggests she was disciplined for refusing to implicate her peers.
While she appears in the 1994 Naval Academy yearbook, Sherrill has declined to authorize the release of sealed disciplinary records that would clarify the exact details of the punishment.

The news surfaced after the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) released a trove of Sherrill’s military records to Nicholas De Gregorio, an ally of the Ciattarelli campaign. This leak has sparked a secondary, politically charged crisis.

Sherrill’s campaign communications director Sean Higgins condemned the act:

This incident happened 32 years ago. She didn’t cheat. She simply didn’t rat out her classmates, as any good NJ person would refuse to do. Her punishment was that she wasn’t allowed to walk with her class. Big deal. She went on to graduate, have a good career in the military, with three promotions.
What was done to her by way of release of personal info, like SS#, parents’ address, medical records, etc was a crime, in breach of the Privacy Act 1974. But this administration will likely refuse to prosecute, since it probably instigated or assisted with this de facto doxxing.
Now, onto Ciattarelli’s misdeeds — at the debate, he said to a 12-year-old boy, “I’ve never broken the law.” That was a lie. He was convicted 20 times for various driving offenses, including a number of high-speed speeding tickets, obstructing passing vehicles, failure to wear seat belts, and other potentially dangerous breaches of law. Yes, he broke the law, and then lied about it.
This information was gathered from publicly available court records on the NJ eCourts system that anyone can access if you know how and where to look. In his case 18 of the 20 convictions were under his legal birth name, Giacchino Ciattarelli, so if you want to look it up, look there.
