NEW YORK CITY — A multi-bus crash at the Port Authority Bus Terminal early Wednesday morning has injured at least a dozen people and severely disrupted New Jersey Transit bus service and Lincoln Tunnel traffic, according to officials.
The New York Port Authority bus terminal closed this morning due to a multi-bus collision, according to NJ Transit.
🚌 Three NJ Transit Buses Collide Near Terminal
The accident occurred around 6:15 a.m. on the inbound ramp at West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue, where three NJ Transit buses collided, said Port Authority Police. The ramp, commonly used by express buses entering the city from New Jersey, was immediately shut down, leading to significant commuter delays.
🚑 Injuries and Emergency Response
According to the FDNY and Port Authority Police:
-
12 people were injured, most with minor injuries.
-
One individual suffered moderate injuries and required extrication from the wreckage.
-
Ten others were transported to local hospitals.
-
One person refused medical attention at the scene.
“We initially had some difficulty getting to the ramp, because traffic was backed up behind it,” said FDNY Deputy Chief Jason Saffon. “We worked with Port Authority Police to open the exit ramp so our ambulances could get through by going up the wrong way.”
The buses involved were not full, and most of the injured were passengers from two of the three buses involved, officials said.
🚧 Traffic & Transit Disruptions
The express bus lane ramp remains closed for the morning commute, with NJ Transit rerouting affected buses to alternate stations:
-
Secaucus Junction
-
Newark Penn Station
-
Hoboken Terminal
Commuters can also expect significant delays around the Lincoln Tunnel and nearby Midtown streets.
One eyewitness on a bus caught behind the crash described being stuck in the tunnel for 15 minutes, adding:
“There were fire trucks, cops, everything. Total chaos.”
❓ Cause Still Under Investigation
As of this report, the cause of the crash is unknown. Investigators are working to determine what led to the collision.
