Washington DC, President-elect Donald Trump has suggested merging the United States and Canada in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement. Trump floated the idea on Truth Social, claiming it would eliminate tariffs, reduce taxes, and enhance national security.
Trump’s Vision for a Unified Nation
“If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them,” Trump wrote. “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
Trump also argued that such a merger would end the U.S.’s “massive trade deficits” with Canada and eliminate subsidies that benefit the northern neighbor.
Trudeau Resigns Amid Mounting Challenges
On Monday, Trudeau announced his resignation ahead of Canada’s general elections later this year, citing internal party struggles and poor polling for his Liberal Party.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau said.
The 53-year-old prime minister has served in his role for nine years and led the Liberal Party for 11 years. His resignation follows a series of challenges, including:
- A top minister’s public resignation, criticizing his approach as “costly political gimmicks.”
- Rising tensions with the U.S. over Trump’s threats of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
- Ongoing economic pressures, such as the high cost of living and immigration issues.
Trump’s Reaction to Trudeau’s Exit
Following Trudeau’s announcement, Trump suggested that many Canadians would welcome the idea of becoming the “51st State” of the U.S.
“Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned,” Trump claimed, adding that such a merger would benefit both nations economically and politically.
Criticism and Political Fallout
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also resigned recently, citing frustrations with Trudeau’s leadership and the escalating tension with the U.S.
Trump, who previously referred to Trudeau as Canada’s “governor” during a dinner, criticized Freeland’s behavior as “totally toxic.”
Despite Trudeau’s assurances of retaliation against Trump’s proposed tariff hikes, the Liberal Party now faces a leadership vacuum. The party has called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday to begin the process of selecting Trudeau’s successor.
What’s Next for Canada and U.S. Relations?
With Trudeau’s resignation, Canada enters a period of political uncertainty. Meanwhile, Trump’s proposal of a U.S.-Canada merger has sparked debate over its feasibility and potential impacts.

Ridiculous. Let’s concentrate on fixing the problems and issues in our own country. Never mind about taking over another country or territory. Obviously Canada has something we want like natural resources that we can exploit.
Look up “hyperbole.”
Nah, I’d rather go on imperialist safaris while the homeland crumbles.
But I won’t say that this is a good or bad idea. What I will say is that many of the people who would applaud this effort because it carries the Trump brand absolutely hated the idea in the past when it was better known as part of Marx’s plan for regional trading blocs.
Sing with me, folks:
One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One, one
