Washington DC, in a high-stakes move impacting global trade, former President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has agreed to extend the deadline for imposing a 50% tariff on European Union exports to the United States. The extension follows a phone call with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and gives both sides until July 9, 2025, to negotiate a resolution.
Trump had previously threatened to enact the steep tariffs by June 1, citing long-standing grievances with what he described as unfair trade practices by the EU. The call from von der Leyen, however, appears to have prompted a shift in tone.
“I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen… requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline… I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
Von der Leyen also confirmed the conversation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “good call” and expressing optimism about future negotiations.
“The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship. Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively,” she stated.
Tariff Threat Remains on the Table
Despite the temporary reprieve, Trump’s earlier comments suggest that the tariff threat is far from off the table. On Friday, he criticized the EU’s trade policies, calling them “very difficult to deal with” and accusing the bloc of imposing “powerful trade barriers,” “unjustified lawsuits,” and “monetary manipulations.”
“The European Union… has led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250 billion a year,” Trump wrote.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later clarified that the tariff threat was aimed at expediting EU negotiations.

More tariffs whiplash. What a way to add chaos to the economy.
EU was basically created to rip us off. The chaos will be theirs, not ours, for a change.
I think they now have meds for TDS.
