Washington, D.C. — Federal law enforcement officers will patrol the streets of the nation’s capital for the next seven days, the White House announced Thursday, in an effort to combat rising violent crime and ensure public safety.
The increased federal presence will begin at midnight and will be led by the U.S. Park Police. The operation will also include agents and officers from the FBI, DEA, ATF, ICE, and other federal agencies. According to the White House, all federal units will operate in clearly marked vehicles.
The move follows President Donald Trump’s remarks on Wednesday, in which he said he was considering taking control of the Washington, D.C., police department after a violent attack on a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer.
“Washington, D.C. is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C.”
The White House emphasized that the initiative is part of the president’s broader effort to make the capital safer for residents, lawmakers, and visitors from across the globe.
The deployment comes amid heightened political tensions and public concern over crime rates in major U.S. cities, with Washington, D.C., frequently under the national spotlight.
