WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on updating the 2020 U.S. Census — a move that could significantly reshape the political map ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The order, announced Thursday morning, calls for a “highly accurate census” that excludes individuals residing in the United States illegally. Trump emphasized that the revised count should be based on modern-day data and insights from the 2024 presidential election.

“People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS,” Trump declared on Truth Social. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Impact on Congressional Representation

Census results play a crucial role in determining how many U.S. House seats each state holds. The data also helps allocate hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding for schools, hospitals, infrastructure, and community programs.

By removing undocumented immigrants from the official count, states with large non-citizen populations — many of which lean Democrat — could lose congressional seats, while Republican-leaning states could gain representation.

GOP Strategy Before the 2026 Midterms

The move aligns with Trump’s push for Republican-controlled states to redraw congressional maps in ways that could benefit GOP candidates. Texas has been a focal point of this effort, with Trump asserting the state is “entitled” to gain at least five House seats in next year’s elections.

The Constitutional Role of the Census

The U.S. Constitution mandates a nationwide census every 10 years to count all residents, regardless of immigration status. Traditionally, the Census Bureau has included everyone living in the country at the time of the count.

According to the Census Bureau, the population data “tells us who we are and where we are going as a nation” and guides decisions on where to build everything from schools to supermarkets, homes to hospitals.

Trump’s directive marks a significant shift in how future population counts could be conducted — and could have lasting political and economic consequences for years to come.
