Washington DC, Â in a sweeping late-night move, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday directing the termination of all federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The order also tasks all federal agencies with identifying and ending any additional taxpayer support going to the two public broadcasters.
Key Points of the Executive Order:
-
Federal funding for NPR and PBS to be canceled through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
-
CPB must halt direct and indirect support, including funds passed through local public stations.
-
CPB has until June 30 to implement the changes.
-
Additional review ordered to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination statutes.
In the executive order, Trump criticized taxpayer-funded media in the digital age, writing:
“Government funding of news media in this environment is not only outdated and unnecessary but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence.”
He added that CPB funding should not support “biased and partisan news coverage,” emphasizing that “no media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies.”
Impact on NPR and PBS
While the federal funding cut is significant, it is not expected to shut down either organization:
-
PBS receives approximately 15% of its funding through the CPB.
-
NPR member stations receive 10%, and NPR itself gets only 1% of its total budget from CPB.
-
Both outlets rely heavily on foundation grants, sponsorships, and viewer/listener donations.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was set to receive $535 million annually in congressional appropriations for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. That funding will now be reallocated, pending CPB’s compliance with the president’s directive.
Political Context
President Trump has long criticized NPR and PBS, labeling them as “biased” and politically left-leaning. In a March 27 Truth Social post, he called for their immediate defunding, saying:
“NPR and PBS, two horrible and completely biased platforms … should be DEFUNDED by Congress, IMMEDIATELY.”
A White House fact sheet supporting the order accused the networks of offering “in-kind contributions to the Democrat party”, which would violate the CPB’s legal mandate to remain nonpartisan and apolitical.
Next Steps and Oversight
In a further measure, Trump assigned Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to investigate whether NPR and PBS are complying with anti-discrimination laws in employment practices. If violations are found, corrective action will follow.
This executive order adds to Trump’s broader agenda of limiting federal involvement in media and redirecting taxpayer dollars away from organizations he deems politically partial.

It was absolutely outrageous that a news organization was funded by taxpayer money, and that news organization was delivering nothing by one sided political bias.
Obviously someone who never watches PBS or listens to NPR.
If you are a Dem voter, which you obviously are, then it simply wouldn’t seem biased. And regardless of bias, why are taxpayers funding a news service?
Dem voters KNOW it is biased.
They just don’t care since they AGREE with the bias.
This isn’t the way that funding decisions should be made. Congress appropriated this money, and Congress can make the decision to cease doing so. The President cannot unilaterally decide not to spend money Congress has appropriated.
Congress has completely abdicated its checks and balances responsibility.
Thank God for this president. No $$ to liberal production centers including the Ivy League Hedge Funds disguised as Universities
When is congress going to grow a pair and tell Trump that deciding where funds are allocated is their job?
Maybe you missed it, but Republicans hold the majority in both houses of Congress.
Then get them on the record. Cowards
NPR and PBS are technologically obsolete
Loss of free speech is next
you mean like under Biden and Obama ?
btw government supported media is not free speech its propaganda
It’s about time! Liberal bias for years. Even teaching our children about being woke Sesame Street!! Good by liberal thinking!

When you go to China and Russia, the government owns the networks and they control all the TV and all the news. There is no freedom of speech at all. The government tells you what they want and that’s it. It’s very interesting watching all they do is praise the government if you talk bad about the government they cut your head off

Good – the “journalists” there are clearly BIASED!
NPR CEO Maher is a far left liberal w a bad case of TDS. Pull all federal funding.
I cried when I read about this. We are going to drown in stupidity.

This is so long overdue. Happy to see them go!
NPR & PBS is government propaganda.
Our taxe payer money should not get funneled to liberal echo chambers that promote criminals, open borders & world wars, child seks changes, racial division.
We need media outlets that are going to challenge the status quo and create real discussions to find solutions for our short and long term success and self-sustainability
If you believe in something and you know in your heart, stand up tall on your own 2 feet and dont back down. Our family fought and died for this country and what it used to be…not what it is now.
Actually, its Socialist Propoganda … aka Democrat party agenda.
looks like trump flipped them the “Big Bird”
