Glen Rock NJ, a 40-year-old Queens resident has been accused of scamming an elderly Bergen County homeowner out of more than $25,000 in a home improvement scheme, according to Glen Rock police.
Arrest and Charges
Authorities said Abba Cohen, 40, of Flushing, NY, was arrested by the New York City Police Department on August 11. He is currently being held in New York while awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
Cohen faces charges in Glen Rock for:
-
Conspiracy to commit theft by deception
-
Receiving stolen property
Police confirmed the charges stem from a January 2024 home improvement scam that defrauded a Bergen County senior of $25,800.
A Pattern of Scams
This is not Cohen’s first run-in with law enforcement. Published reports note he has previously been arrested on similar charges.
Authorities emphasized that home improvement scams targeting seniors are on the rise. Just last year, another Queens man was arrested for a “roof repair” scam that also targeted Bergen County residents.
Protecting Seniors from Scams
Police are urging residents to remain vigilant when approached by unsolicited contractors offering home repairs. Seniors, in particular, are often targeted by scammers who request large upfront payments but never complete the work.
What’s Next
Cohen remains in custody in New York City while the extradition process to Bergen County is underway. If convicted, he could face significant penalties for defrauding an elderly homeowner.
