WESTWOOD, NJ — A potentially disastrous Fourth of July evening in downtown Westwood was averted thanks to the swift and coordinated actions of local first responders and utility crews, according to Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo.
In a detailed Facebook post, Mayor Arroyo shared the behind-the-scenes story of how an unexpected transformer explosion led to an underground electrical fire, knocking out power to businesses, traffic lights, NJ Transit signals, and even train gates — just as families were beginning to celebrate Independence Day.
💥 Transformer Explosion Causes Power Outage in Downtown Westwood
Quoting Billy Joel’s lyrics — “I’ve seen the lights go out on Broadway…” — Mayor Arroyo likened the scene to a dramatic blackout. The central business district (CBD) was left in darkness just as July 4th celebrations were ramping up.
The quick response from Westwood Police Department (WPD), Westwood Fire Department (WVFD), Department of Public Works (DPW), and PSE&G prevented the situation from escalating further.
🚓 First Responders Step In to Restore Order
-
WPD Sgt. Dean McCarroll, the shift’s tour commander, rapidly deployed cones and directed traffic at powerless intersections, ensuring pedestrian and driver safety.
-
WVFD Deputy Chief Brian Wiecenski played a pivotal role in managing a potentially chaotic and dangerous environment.
-
DPW responder Matt Velthaus coordinated with DPW Superintendent Rick Woods to have municipal resources ready in case repairs escalated.
Even WPD Chief Michael Pontillo, who was out of state on vacation, stayed in constant communication to keep Westwood officials informed.
⚡ PSE&G Crews Work Through the Night
Thanks to PSE&G’s rapid response, the source of the outage was isolated and repairs were made without tearing up the road. Workers pumped water out of the manhole and restored full power by just after midnight.
Mayor Arroyo praised the tireless efforts of the utility workers and called out the dedication of all involved:
“We have a great team and we truly appreciate their commitment to public safety.”
🙌 A Community Effort Saves the Holiday
The collective action ensured that the Fourth of July spirit wasn’t dimmed by darkness. Westwood residents were able to enjoy the evening safely — and the community avoided what could have been a much more serious disruption.
