Reader asks  Is nothing sacred? is everything for sale? Is there no decency left in the Village?

Reader suggests, That’s a stunning site….it would be sacrilege to install an antenna anywhere near that church. And I’m not even Presbyterian.

Others say ,”If the argument against installation is based upon aspects of sacrilege, then this is only something that this church and its congregants have to reconcile. Outsiders using this argument have no voice in it, and I suspect are using this feigned outrage due to some degree of liberal anti-business bias, or possibly some interest in a competing company.”

Others say , “how would you possibly notice a 2 foot extension on top of a cross which is 65 feet from the ground? Seems like it would be pretty hard to see, much less to have it interfere with your enjoyment of the site.”

But this reader seems to sum it up ,”I am not a member of this congregation but I find this idea deeply offensive. It is hard to believe that the members of this church support this plan. It would be preferable to remove the cross, then put as many antenae as they want up there and worship at the altar of Verizon. It matters little to me if it is visible or not, the idea is obscene. Is nothing sacred? is everything for sale? Is there no decency left in the Village?”

  1. The church doesn’t care so why should anyone else. BTW, the churches should be paying taxes as was suggested the hospital should.

  2. Once they took Christ off the cross, it was only a matter of time before something else took his place.

  3. Yes #2 Now they pray to the almighty dollar god. The church doesn’t care because they need money. Can you imagine that ! A church who pays no taxes and located on the rich side of town has to go this low. Whats next in Ridgewood justifying prostitution to pay your property taxes.

  4. “is everything for sale?” Yes just look what going on in the CBD with the developers

  5. I can’t help but think most of the complainers don’t have an actual religious bone in their bodies. I also suspect that they really are members of the growing cult of liberal anti-business types. Online comment boards are full of them.

  6. Someone fetch my feinting couch.

  7. Don’t think for me Declan. I am neither of the above.

  8. It is up to the church and there parishioners to decide not the dumb comments on this blog.

  9. Free speech JJJ or does that only apply when you want to post? Same with civility.

  10. If the congregation has no issue with this then it’s a non-issue…. their “call”…

  11. JJJ has never posted a dumb comment just ask him?

  12. Face it, the town has become completely unkempt, but it is so very civil…

  13. Yes, the congregation owns the real estate so they have the legal right to pursue this application. Surely however they have a moral obligation to the community and especially to fellow Christians.

A decade ago that church burned down. It’s congregation and ministries were welcomed at the facilities of other churches while the new church was resurrected from the ashes.

I have always been amazed at the beautiful new structure that was built, Now when I drive by it I am just sad. A telcom antenae affixed to the cross–how do you explain that to the young people in the congregation?

  14. Some great novelist ought to incorporate this situation into a story.

  15. Maybe they think it will lead to a better signal to reach the big guy in the sky…

  16. This is not about religion. The church is making a business decision. I do not care what they decide.

  17. Well if as you say it a business decision then they must be a business and should pay property taxes.
