Reader says high density housing will only result in MORE children in school AND HIGHER taxes for services to support those children

clock ridgewood NJ

It’s been said before and should keep being said, we all want seniors to be able to stay in town if they would like. Apartments currently exist for that purpose and a few more can and maybe should be built within the current density levels.

But the worst thing that could happen to seniors who would like to stay in their homes would be for hundreds of new apartments to be built. Either families would occupy those apartments OR the homes vacated by seniors moving into apartments. Either way the result is MORE children in school AND HIGHER taxes for services to support those children (school budget is by far the largest % of our tax bills). We NEED to find ways for people without children in school to stay in their homes and increasing the school budget is not the way to do it.

  1. Time for another ordinance. Only allowed to sell/rent to people without school age children. Why not? We have an ordinance for every other stupid BS idea that was brought up at a council meeting. It’s all about keeping the property value up.

  2. A good time start, along with lower density numbers overall…

  3. It may not be legal to say that, and you can’t ask young couples or individuals if they are pregnant or planning to be.

At least as important is water use. On September 14, unprecedentedly, we remain under stage IV watering restrictions. The world is getting hotter. We must all share water with our fellow residents. But to add hundreds more now, very probably creating more intense or extended watering restrictions in the future–even beyond property irrigation–would be unconscionable and blind to the facts.

This town has no concept of planning whatsoever. All the so-called Village Planner can say is, “The devil is in the details.” He is an IDIOT. That job defines “sinecure.”

Everything around here is the Fire Brigade putting out fires. That is a self-defeating, exhausting, expensive, doomed way to run a town, business, or household. In fact, we not only experience emergencies that way–we create them.

Well, we may not have any water to put out some future fires if we foolishly increase our population to the intended extent to please a few greedy developers. Has anybody figured out how much water an assisted-living community uses? I guess parking garages don’t use that much….

  4. 8:54, why not? And if they decide down the road that they don’t like the rule, no problem, they can ignore their own laws.

  5. Glen rock has age restricted housing…it is far from unprecedented.

  6. Lower the density to 25 units per acre and you must be over 55 years of age to live there, this has been done in surrounding towns.

  7. Even over 55 can have others live with them.

  8. Density has to be lower to 18-25 units an acre.

The original point is that we should be encouraging empty nesters to stay in their homes, If they vacate for apartments (here or somewhere else) en masse, that is just as bad for the schools because families will young children will move into those homes.

  9. Would older people be thrilled to hear kids screaming through their apartment walls and down the hall? They have been there, done that.

  10. I wonder exactly what the Big Three have planned for us this week? I hate to think that someone is truly crooked, although it’s fun to speculate.

Simple question: WHY do we need high-mid-or-even low density housing in the downtown area? Due to the car show last Friday night, it took me 40 minutes to get downtown. Yes, this is a great one-off event, and I support it. But even on any other Friday, other than summertime when people are away, its a mess when the train unloads and people are going back-and-forth with their children. WHY make downtown Ridgewood more congested? Simple question for the Three Amigos.

  11. And no impact on other village services? This is a miracle.

  12. Well either they are crooked or stupid or both. Do they actually believe whoever moves in will not have children, will not have cars but will have tons of money to spend in our downtown??

I agree, town is too busy as it is! Not enough water, not enough fields or green space, not enough parking at the library or any school.
