Reader says time to change residency requirement for new hires
That residency requirement for new hires limits who we can hire, but if it was changed to residency after one year of appointment we’d get a much broader range of qualified applicants going for these golden jobs with their multi-million dollar lifetime benefits. And let the Village fire people for incompetence. Now apparently the only way to get rid of a Village employee is to catch them stealing quarters. According to some former Village employees on this blog, the Engineering department where that thief was employed has cost taxpayers millions of dollars in DEP and other fines, lost quarters, and flooded fields and Village Hall that need to be repaired every time we get a super storm. Where is the accountability to taxpayers there ?
The expanding of new hires should be considered for what “new talent” they have.
Sure lets get a qualified candidate that lives an hour or two away this way when it snows or the weather is bad they can call in sick ( More overtime) Check the police roster while most don’t live in town Ridgewood boys seem to move to the surrounding towns. Their roots are in this area. Unless you want someone who look at this job as just that a job that they leave the area and don’t care about the problems or kids in the area.
That residency requirement for new hires only affect police & fire but since you brought it up maybe we should get rid or the residents requirement for Village Council we’d get a much broader range of qualified applicants. BROKEN RECORD
I think most on the police roster do look at this as ‘just a job’.
When I grew up here they were part of the community since most lived here.
(and back then the pay was not at the level it is today )
I can’t say that I would be able to recite any current officer’s names.

Ok 3 prove to us you lived here growing up …name some of the Officers who were on the force when you were a kid.
Why is there a residency requirement only for RPD and RFD new hires ? It makes sense in the case of the Council given they are stewards of taxpayer funds in budget approvals; they should be taxpayers, too. I’m not sure you can argue that the departments try to save taxpayer dollars, i.e. 7% budget requests despite a 2% cap ! FANTASY LAND
#4 = GLORY DAYS
Well…if you insist… ottens, kennedy, both orrs, both kays, both lembos, hence, vangoor, Milliken, ottens, whitehead(not Richie),det shortwy, epple, foxn, denise, mader, ackalitis, and the last cop to ever direct traffic…jack the ‘whistler’.
Enough ‘proof’ for you? And we knew them since they lived here… and they actually worked here 5 days a week..not 3!
That department is a bit strange.

They were a good group of neighbors, friends, and village employees.
