Real Estate – Benefit Concert for Nick Currey Fund June 24th at 7 PM Kasschau Shell on Veteran’s Field
Real Living Gateway Realtors presents Real Estate A Benefit Concert for the Nick Currey Fund for Ewing Sarcoma Research Sunday, June 24th at 7 PM Kasschau Memorial Shell Ridgewood, NJ .
Opening for Real Estate will be Toasted Plastic and Spook Houses from Ridgewood, NJ Nick Currey Fund: In 2005, 19-year-old Nick Currey of Ridgewood, New Jersey, lost his life to Ewing sarcoma, a cancer of the bone (and at times soft tissue) that develops in young people.
Nick’s parents, Nancy and Ralph Currey, established the Nick Currey Fund in his memory to support research that will speed the day when no young person’s life is cut short by Ewing sarcoma. Nick survived leukemia as a child (he was treated between the ages of four and six) only to succumb to Ewing sarcoma as a young adult. Being a leukemia survivor may well have caused Nick to develop Ewing sarcoma. Childhood cancer survivors are nine times more likely than the general population to develop a sarcoma. In addition, the lifetime dosages of chemotherapy Nick received directly contributed to his death. His body could not survive the intense chemotherapy associated with the autologous stem cell transplant that was his last, best hope. If more targeted, less toxic therapies had been available, Nick might be alive today.
While survival rates for childhood cancer have shown impressive improvement, those statistics only capture patients who survive five or 10 years. They do not reflect the survivors like Nick who suffer an early death from secondary cancers or devastating long-term side effects such as heart disease that result from the toxicity of current therapies. The Nick Currey Fund is dedicated to finding new and improved therapies for Ewing sarcoma that either represent a real cure or are less toxic than conventional chemotherapy.
(Martin and Alex of Real Estate graduated High School with Nick Currey) Real Estate: October 17th 2011, New Jersey’s Real Estate released Days, their second album and first for Domino. A gorgeous suite of guitar-pop songs, Days is a testament to the fact that the sonic formula Real Estate developed and shared with their debut album (Real Estate, Woodsist,2009) heralded the arrival of a new, genuine and enduring group of voices in American independent music.
Days sees the band tighten and refine their brand of timeless, melodic and genuine music- consolidating the breezy sketches of their earlier work into considered, graceful pop songs. In the summer of 2008, high school friends Martin Courtney (Guitar and Vocals), Matt Mondanile (Guitar) and Alex Bleeker (bass) graduated from their respective colleges and returned to Ridgewood – the New Jersey suburb in which they had all grown up and first learned to play music. The band spent the two years since the release of their debut touring around the world, working out the album’s songs live, improvising their structures and allowing them to breathe enough to reach their most natural and refined end. Days, months and eventually years went by, seasons changed, and with that change Real Estate came of age.
