New REAL ID Rules Take Effect for U.S. Domestic Travelers
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, starting today, most travelers flying within the United States must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card at airport security checkpoints and federal facilities.
REAL IDs are easily identified by a star in the upper right corner of the license or ID. According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, individuals without a compliant ID may still board flights, but should expect additional screening procedures.
Currently, about 81% of U.S. travelers already have a REAL ID-compliant form of identification.
What Is the REAL ID and Why Is It Required?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. The aim? To create a more secure, tamper-proof identification system that makes it harder to forge documents and strengthens national security.
REAL ID-compliant licenses require more stringent verification of personal information, including proof of legal residency, Social Security numbers, and birth certificates.
Why Did It Take So Long?
Although the original rollout was planned for 2008, the REAL ID program has faced numerous delays over the years due to:
-
Cost and privacy concerns from individual states
-
Limited federal funding
-
Technical implementation challenges
-
The COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted processing timelines
What Travelers Need to Do
If you plan to fly domestically and don’t yet have a REAL ID, here’s what to do:
-
Check your current ID for a star in the upper-right corner.
-
Visit your state’s DMV or motor vehicle agency website to see REAL ID application requirements.
-
Bring the required documents—typically a birth certificate or passport, Social Security card, and proof of residence.
