Four New Jersey Stores Picket in Record-Breaking Starbucks Workers United Labor Action
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, The nationwide labor dispute at Starbucks reached a new peak this week as baristas from four New Jersey locations joined the ongoing “Red Cup Rebellion.” This action marks day 22 of the longest unfair labor practice strike in the coffee giant’s history, significantly escalating the tension between the company and Starbucks Workers United (SWU).
Customers craving their favorite iced beverages need to check their local store, as baristas from 26 stores across 23 U.S. cities—including key New Jersey towns—have walked off the job.
The NJ Stores Impacted by the Strike
Baristas from the following New Jersey locations joined the picket lines on Thursday, December 4th, boosting the union’s numbers:
-
Ledgewood
-
Parsippany
-
Pennington
-
Rockaway
This brings the total number of striking stores nationwide to over 145, with more than 3,000 baristas having joined the labor action since the “Red Cup Rebellion” began on November 13th.
Why Are Baristas Striking? Core Demands
The strike is centered around three core demands the union is pushing for in negotiations with the coffee giant:
-
Better Staffing and Hours: Addressing understaffing that leads to overwork and stress.
-
Higher Take-Home Pay: Seeking wages that reflect the cost of living and their contributions.
-
Resolution of Unfair Labor Practices: Challenging alleged illegal union-busting activities by the company.
The Starbucks Union (SWU), which originated in Buffalo, NY, in 2021, now represents over 11,000 baristas across more than 550 stores, showcasing rapid growth in the labor movement.
The Complex Relationship: Starbucks and the “Latte Liberal”
The labor conflict has put Starbucks’ historically progressive public image under severe strain, particularly among its core liberal customer base—the so-called “latte liberals.”
| Historical Perception (“Latte Liberal”) | Current Tensions |
| Progressive Stances: Known for supporting LGBTQ+ rights and offering benefits to part-time staff. | Anti-Union Backlash: Accused of aggressive union-busting, alienating liberal activists and customers. |
| Founder’s Alignment: Former CEO Howard Schultz ran as a socially liberal Democrat. | Geopolitical Conflicts: Facing boycotts from both sides of the Israel-Gaza conflict, scrutinized for perceived neutrality. |
| Customer Base: Stores often located in liberal, urban areas, reinforcing the stereotype. | “No Contract, No Coffee”: Over 200,000 people have signed a pledge to boycott during the strike. |
In essence, while the brand built its identity on progressive social values, its recent corporate actions regarding labor have alienated many of the customers who once saw the company as an ethical choice, leading to a significant shift in public perception and fueling the effectiveness of the current boycott.
What this means for customers: Customers should be prepared for potential closures or reduced services at the striking New Jersey locations. The most direct way to support the striking baristas is by honoring the “No Contract, No Coffee” pledge and choosing an alternative coffee source.

There are plenty of alternatives.
Honestly, I have no idea how anyone can drink Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.
At least it’s not burnt, and is half the price, and takes 10% of the time to make. WIN – WIN – WIN!!
Every Starbucks should be Union, I see some of these managers how they talk to their employees. They talk down to them, I see them belittle them. Not nice.
Is your housekeeper and landscaper union?
Agreed. Love to see it. Just another reason not to go. What a horrible store.
Green hair dye is expensive!
