Washington DC, Speaking on Fox News, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) highlighted the role of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York Attorney General Letitia James in energizing Trump’s supporters.
“Well, the great irony in all of this is that I don’t think anyone did more to help elect Donald Trump president of the United States than Alvin Bragg and Tish James,” said Lawler. He referred to Bragg’s prosecution of Trump, which resulted in a 12-person jury finding the president-elect guilty of 34 counts related to falsifying business records. Trump, however, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
“Rogue Prosecutors” and Controversial Charges
Lawler criticized Bragg and James as “rogue prosecutors” who campaigned on promises to target Trump. “They said it. They ran on it. And then, in fact, did it. And in both cases, the charges make no sense,” Lawler added.
Bragg’s case specifically revolved around elevating what might have been a misdemeanor Federal Election Commission (FEC) violation into a state felony, a move Lawler believes lacked legal merit.
Upcoming Sentencing and Presidential Immunity
New York Judge Juan Merchan recently announced that sentencing for Trump’s conviction would occur on Jan. 10, 2025—just 10 days before Trump’s scheduled inauguration. The decision raised questions about how legal proceedings might intersect with Trump’s immunity from criminal prosecution as president.
Merchan hinted he might refrain from imposing a sentence, acknowledging concerns about prosecuting a sitting president.
In response, Trump issued a fiery statement, calling for Merchan’s disbarment and labeling the charges as politically motivated. “It is a fake, made-up charge by a corrupt judge who is just doing the work of the Biden/Harris Injustice Department,” Trump said.
Lawler’s Call for Dismissal
Lawler argued that the hush money case should have been dismissed outright. “In the case of Alvin Bragg, he took what would have amounted to, at worst, a violation of the FEC and turned it from a federal case into a state case, and from a misdemeanor to a felony,” he explained.
Political Fallout
The ongoing legal battles have done little to dampen Trump’s momentum. Instead, they appear to have solidified his base, helping him secure a decisive victory in the 2024 election.
