PARSIPPANY — “Are you willing to sacrifice more of your rights?” Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5th Dist.) asked a roomful of Tea Party faithful today in Parsippany.
“NO,” the crowd roared in unison.
“Is that what George Washington and his army fought for? Ever more taxes and ever more regulations? Do you want to see your constitution trampled on?” probed Garrett, the most conservative member of New Jersey’s congressional delegation.
“NO,” the crowd responded again, but this time giving him a standing ovation.
Some in the crowd even seemed to have been brought to tears by the thought of the injustice described by Garrett.
His passionate call to action came in a speech to about 1,000 of the state’s most conservative voters at the 6th annual Defending the American Dream Summit at the Sheraton Parsippany. The event is sponsored by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, an advocacy group founded and financed by Charles and David Koch, two conservative businessmen and political activists.
Garrett, whose re-election next month is considered a virtual certainty, is being challenged by Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen of Teaneck, and the rally provided a chance for Garrett to reaffirm his strength in his newly drawn district.
