Westwood NJ, during the recent Westwood Reorganization Meeting, Westwood resident Dan Zambrano was recognized as the 2025 Volunteer of the Year. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Dan expressed his surprise and gratitude, saying:
“Had no idea I was the recipient of Westwood’s 2025 Volunteer of the Year—literally had to do a double-take. Thank you to our Borough, Mayor Ray Arroyo, and council, especially Erin Collins for keeping this under wraps and presenting the proclamation!”
Dan also shared an inspiring quote from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, reflecting his passion for the environment:
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.”
His dedication underscores the importance of community efforts in supporting Westwood’s tree canopy and green initiatives.
Looking Ahead
According to Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo , Westwood Shade Tree will start 2025 with the help of Consulting Arborist and Licensed Tree Expert, Liz Stewart, who will be inventorying all of our Borough’s Street Trees this year! The inventory will identify existing Borough trees including tree type, size (DBH), basic condition, and if utility wires are present using an ISA Level I (windshield) or II (walking around the tree) evaluation depending on the site.
The inventory will be presented to the Borough (and public) directly into the data management system, Davey Tree Keeper, which will be kept up to date by the Borough and used as a way to document all tree communication for each tree moving forward. This data will first give us a snapshot of the size and health of our Borough’s tree canopy. We will also have an idea how many vacant spots are available on Borough Streets for new tree plantings. We will add the map to the Borough Website once the tree inventory begins!
