NEW MILFORD, NJ — The New Milford community is mourning the tragic death of retired special education teacher Elizabeth “Betty” Caruso, who was killed in Miami Beach, Florida, allegedly by her son, according to multiple media reports.
Authorities say Anthony R. Caruso, 40, of Florida, has been charged with murder after Miami Beach police discovered his mother’s body in a trash chute during a welfare check.
What Happened in Miami Beach?
Betty Caruso had flown from New Jersey to Florida to check on her son, who was reportedly on probation after serving time in jail. When her son-in-law hadn’t heard from her for several hours, he asked Miami Beach police to conduct a welfare check.
Police arrived to find her body in the building’s trash chute. Caruso was arrested after an eight-hour SWAT team standoff, CBS Miami reported.

Betty Caruso dedicated 25 years of her career to the New Milford Public School District as a preschool special education teacher. She retired in 2022, leaving behind a long legacy of care and dedication to her students and colleagues.
