Fort Lee NJ, the Brigade’s annual “Retreat Weekend” is back as we gear up for the 250th event of these historic moments in just 2 years! These are the darkest days of the Revolution to be portrayed, where not only thousands of lives were lost, but the desperate nature of the campaign led to the question of what is the cause and its’ worth… but from these days that tried men’s souls, a nation was ultimately cemented.

The “Retreat from Fort Lee” will take place on Saturday, November 23 at Fort Lee Historic Palisades Park in Fort Lee, NJ. This event will be an accurate representation of the chaos of retreat as the British army and their allies push the Continental forces off the Jersey Palisades. Throughout the day, the public spectators will engage with soldiers working on fortifying their current positions while the civilians of both armies share the struggles of following an army on campaign. Besides drilling and labor, the forces will combine for a parade to monument park to honor those that gave their lives in 1776 and since. After the tactical demonstration in the afternoon, members are invited to the auditorium within the Visitor Center for a quick presentation on the campaign and the role Fort Lee played in it. The Fort Lee visitor center and also the grounds at Historic New Bridge Landing will be available for overnight stays whether it is modern or period camping.

The “Retreat to New Bridge” will take place on Sunday, November 24 at Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge, NJ. The event will showcase the disgruntled Continentals as they once again retreat in the face of an advancing and formidable enemy. Multiple tactical demonstrations throughout the day will showcase how Washington’s army held their own against the English to control the pivotal bridge at New Bridge Landing, but ultimately had to fall back. Throughout the day, soldiers will once again be fortifying their positions and discussing the scenario with public spectators between formations and maneuvers while civilian followers discuss how they prepare for a campaign that will take them further and further from home.
